Hello everyone and welcome back to the podcast Emilie, better known as the Meta Fairy. And today we are talking about a very, very, very common myth that a lot of people believe. And it’s “can you use vitamin A in the summer?” Hmm, yeah, we’re cracking that code guys! That’s where we’re going. So, let’s talk about this myth. I want to debunk this today. And I want to make you guys understand a little bit more about vitamin A because there’s so much misunderstanding of misconceptions about vitamin A that I feel like I just have to enlighten you guys about it.

But let me ask you this: when you think of vitamin A, what does your mind go to? 99% of the time, you’re gonna think retinol. 99% of time which, it’s true! Retinol is a form of vitamin A. However, there’s a lot of different forms of vitamin A. So you have the alcohol form, which is the retinol, you also have the acid form which would be the prescription strength like tretinoin, for example is one that you’ll hear about. These forms – you have to be a little more careful because they’re a little bit more sensitizing on the skin, they will make your skin UV sensitive as well. So you got to make sure you put on that SPF every two hours if you’re going to wear a prescription strength or retinol in the summer. And you just have to be a little more careful because it doesn’t suit all skin types.

Let me enlighten you with another form of vitamin A, which would be the oil form the esters. So the esters are really really fun because they don’t make your skin UV sensitive. And lot of people don’t know this. The esters do not make your skin UV sensitive and you can wear them everyday because it’s a lower form. 

It’s a lower dosage of vitamin A and it will make your skin irritated. But the reason why I’m saying this is because most of us have probably everyone has a deficiency of vitamin A. And when we have a deficiency in vitamin A, we actually have a bunch of different conditions that will come up in our skin. So whether it’s hyperpigmentation, more acne, accelerated aging, lower skin immunity, there’s just a lot of things that can happen when you have a vitamin D deficiency. Okay, vitamin A is actually an essential skin nutrient that you should feed your skin every day. And as soon as we walk out the doors, because we all have to go into the sunlight, right like, we’re not hermits most of us have to go outside whether it’s to run an errand, whether it’s to go to work, whether it’s to see friends, move around, you know, we have to go out and as soon as we hit that sunlight, whether you’re wearing some protection or not, it actually depletes your cells from that natural vitamin A reserve that they have. So that’s why you need to replenish it on a daily basis. Super important.

And the way to do that is with the esters because you can actually wear them every day. So it kind of throws off the myth of saying “Can you wear vitamin A, on a daily basis?” Yeah, you can in the summer you can absolutely 100%. And the fact that the esters do not make your skin UV sensitive is awesome, because that means that you, ideally, yes, you wear your sunscreen because if you’re doing all the things to make your skin not aged, please put on your sunscreen. It’s not as stressful as if you were to wear a retinol or retinoic acid because they will 100% make your skin UV sensitive.

When a retinoic reaction happens, it means that you will most likely have a reaction to the UV rays and you might have more pigments, you might have irritation and things like that. So the fact that the esters don’t make your skin UV sensitive is awesome because you can really prioritize that form in the summer if you’re more worried about the sun.

So fun fact, and I have to read this because I researched it but ‘ “scientific studies have shown that retinol palmitate, which is a form of the esters offers additional powerful photo protective benefits because it can absorb UVA and UVB rays equivalent to SPF 20.” Isn’t that amazing? How a lower form of vitamin A can actually act as a natural sunscreen. I wouldn’t necessarily say hey, like don’t worry, never wear your sunscreen ever, but it kind of you know, it kind of makes you wonder like why is there so much concern about wearing vitamin A in the summer? Well, if you have the right form, and that’s something that you should be aware of as a consumer, you should just, you know, make your research and ask your questions, but not everyone knows this. So that’s I’m talking about it now.

Now that we touch base on retinol and retinoic acid you can wear it in the summer you can you just have to be uber Uber careful about putting on your sunscreen. Like it’s just it’s a no it’s a no it’s not a discussion. You just have to be super careful about the UV rays. It’s kind of like taking a medication. You know, when you have a medication and there’s like a little warning on the bottle that says UVA-UVB sensitizing. It’s the same idea. You don’t want to use something and then hey, like, I’m fin, I don’t wear my sunscreen then you have all these pigments that come up to the surface. Or you’re promoting more skin cancer. You know what I mean? So yeah, you can wear it you just have to be someone that really really really diligently reapplies their SPF every two hours. Like I’m not kidding every two hours. That’s why I love so much the the powder for those of you are watching the sunscreen, the color science powder, it’s so easy to reapply. You just throw it in your purse, and you can have some color you can have a transparent one, it doesn’t matter but you just put it in your purse and then you reapply every two hours. It’s just so simple.

But yeah, if you’re not someone who doesn’t reapplies sunscreen, it’s probably because you don’t have a product that suits your habits and your lifestyle. So check out the color science. I’ll link it below so you guys can check it out but check it because I actually have a client that said that it was like cheating for her. I’m quoting her that’s not me. So take advantage of that. If you’re especially if you’re someone who’s wearing retinol and retinoic acid, check them out.

But yeah, if obviously these are forms that you’re going to wear at night only. You’re not going to wear that during the day because obviously during the day you’re gonna go outside and have a good old time and go outside so you’d have to be careful. But yeah, I mean, if you guys want to check out in Environ, if you came to the event, you know this is my Environ speech, but they do utilize the ester form in their products. And you can wear it every day and honestly, the skins immunity is much higher, the complexion is much more even the hydration is better too because having that additional vitamin A feed in your skin that means that your moisture barriers and better health so you’re retaining more moisture. You’re also going to regulate those sebaceous glands. So for you guys that have hormonal acne, maybe you’re a little older and you still have problems with breakouts. Vitamin Aysa is your friend if you guys didn’t know Accutane, which is a very popular, strong acne prescription. It’s actually a strong form of vitamin A. So when you lose when you use it in a lower form, you can absolutely regulate those sebaceous gland activity. So something to think about honestly we’ve been using that brand for I’m gonna say almost three months now and my skin has never been in the health that it is now I have this glow all the time. My acne, I mean it’s in my genes,  that was always a struggle, but it’s almost all gone and the texture is better I don’t know I’m just I’m such a fan. I might not be I’m not neutral because I have it and we recommend it but if you have questions make sure that you you can always comment vitamin A in one of the reels post too if you guys want more information honestly our practice has never been better with the use of the environment products and that’s with using vitamin A on daily basis.

Hello hello welcome back to the podcast Emilie here as usual, better known as the meta fairy and today we are talking about four different rules that we live by in order to age and a really well and healthy way, so let’s just touch base on why we’re calling this well aging.

There’s no such thing as anti aging as soon as we hit 27-28 years old, which is pretty young in my opinion, but biology, our natural collagen and elastin production really drops down. So you’re actually starting to age we hit like a peak and then at 28 – 29 we start to slowly age. so there’s no such thing as anti aging things. so this is why I’m saying more rules that we live by so that we can Well ah, okay, let’s just like praise for the well aging things. it’s good to age, it’s a good thing but we might well as unhealthy. So these are four different rules for things that we live by that. Me, either never skip or that we really follow to the core.

So number one, we ever never, ever, ever wash our faces with a bar. So, so this may sound like a really silly thing, but let me explain to you how our bar soap can really throw off your skin and make it age really quickly. So a lot of people will kind of take the first step, which is the cleansing step. They’ll take a really cheap cleanser or they’ll just use a bar of soap to cleanse their face and then they’ll spend their money on, you know, high quality serums and creams and things. Okay, what the problem with that is that it’s the first step. The number one product that you’re going to use on your face all the time it’s going to be a cleanser. And if the cleanser is going to be really harsh, you’re going to throw off your entire moisture barriers health which will give you lots of dehydration and irritation. And if you’re using that every single day and you wonder why you have irritated and dehydrated skin and you can’t fix it, it’s because you’re using something that’s too hard for your skin.

So coming back to the bar of soap does a lot you know, in the world of skincare there’s a lot of things going on, but a bar soap and this is not something that I agree with. It’s because when you look at the formation or the formula bar of soap, there’s binders that hold the bar of soap together. Those are called binders and they naturally have a more alkaline pH. And the problem with using a bar so even if they say that it’s moisturizing bar soap binders will be naturally left onto the skin when you use a bar of soap. So you know that squeaky clean feeling? You’re always gonna get that regardless because the binders are left onto the skin. And because of that squeaky clean feeling because of that alkaline pH, your moisture barrier is going to be completely compromised. So your moisture barrier if you look here and for the people that are watching you, you’ve got this like tight barrier that protects your skin. When your moisture barrier is compromised. You’re going to have cracks in it and it’s going to let the moisture out and it won’t have the capacity to keep it in and the irritants are going to throw in there. they’re going to come in there and that’s going to make your skin completely irritated. flaky, not healthy. and you will have a hard time absorbing any other product: whether it’s a serum moisturizer, you’re gonna have a hard time because your skin’s gonna be irritated all the time.

So when I say that we never ever use a bar of soap to wash your faces, it’s because the binders are so aggressive on the skin that it can throw off your moisture barrier and you will have to repair it after even if you just use it a couple of times. Let’s say you’re you know you’re in a hotel and forgot your stuff which you will never find me in that situation. But you know, I will never use a bar of soap to wash my face, because it does throw off the health of the moisture barrier. With a healthy moisture barrier,
you just have all these other skin conditions that can be fixed when you’re not using something aggressive to wash your face with. So that’s one thing that we never, never never do. we do not use our soap bars to wash our faces number one.

Now number two, we never skip using a moisturizer whether it’s daytime or nighttime! These are so so so important steps guys in your regimen. I know sometimes we feel lazy as a Sunday morning, it’s raining outside you’re like “I’m gonna stay inside all day long.” The issue with that is that your skin always needs moisture. Always. Always always and I’m not just talking about putting water on your face (because your skin is not going to retain that!)
But it always needs a protective moisturizer on top whether it’s daytime or nighttime. So the skin naturally does not have the capacity to breathe. So when people say I’m just gonna let my skin breathe, I mean it’s not really possible because the skin does not have lungs. It can’t do that. So when you think of your skin, you have to think about your skin cells, they’re like little baby fish in the sea and they always need that water in order to thrive in order to be super healthy. So when you skip that step, whether it’s morning or night, you’re actually not doing your skin a favor because your skin cells are like “Where’s where’s my where’s my protective layer for the day? Where’s my repairing ingredients?” So, you’re not really doing yourself a favor. So for the 30 seconds it will take you to put on moisturizer, just do it and you’re just gonna be consistent in your home care and you’re not gonna have these random skin conditions that could pop up because you’re skipping putting on moisturizer. 

And you have to remember that the skin is really acting differently whether it’s the morning or the night. In the daytime your skin is going to be protective. So you want to feed it hydration, antioxidants and protection. So SPF. The reason why your skin is in that protective mode is because usually in the daytime we are in the environment, we’re outside, we get out of the house, even if you’re inside you’re still exposed to that, so you have all these environmental triggers that will trigger your skin. It will try to attack your skin, so your skin being an organ is going to be in protection mode and you can’t really change that! So that’s why I tell people keep your repairing serums for nighttime. Because that’s when your skin is really going to utilize those really impactful ingredients. So in the nighttime, reverse! Okay, I’ve done enough I don’t have external environmental triggers anymore. So let’s just take a chill pill and let’s repair the damage that I got during the daytime and that’s what your skin does. Your skin will naturally be in repair mode at night. So see it as it’s your opportunity to really treat and repair and comments get down for all the damage I got during the day. So coming back to me never skip putting on more stress or to let her skin breathe. We never do that because if you do that a couple of days in a row. It’s enough I don’t understand how to get but generally speaking it’s enough to throw off the hydration throw off the health of the moisture barrier just a little bit so that hey, I’m a little bit more red today. Or, Hey, I’m a little bit more dry. So oh my god, I got pimples because my skin is drier than usual. It’s blocking the signal from coming out like it’s like a little cycle that can just keep on going. So for someone that’s not in this industry, you might think it’s just one day there but to me, it throws off the consistency that you should have that will give you a well eating schedule. So you never skip moisturizer.

Now on to the more serious things. 

Stress. Stress is a huge, huge thing that can impact our health or mental health or physical health or well being. In order to well age, we utilize techniques to ensure that we manage our stress. So I know that sounds kind of like okay, but it’s true. When we are constantly you know in life we have situations that we’re always exposed to so you have traffic jams, you have arguments with your spouse, you have you know little things. Oh, I’m gonna be ready to be late to anything. All these things are so normal, those are called acute stress. So it’s like little, period of time where you have stress. I think you have to be aware of when your stress, cortisol levels go up. And when your cortisol levels go up, it kind of triggers your immune system to like, hey, there’s an attack or there’s something going on. I need to be alert. Okay. And that’s healthy. That’s actually good. Because it keeps your immune system on point. However, when you’re always constantly exposed to stress and you’re always stressed that chronic stress and chronic stress is horrible. The reason behind that is because when again are the levels they go up under stress, right? You’re in a fight or flight situation. And when you’re always constantly on that high of fight or flight, cortisol levels are super high, and your immune system gets used to that, right.

So it kind of because of that prolonged effect of having high cortisol levels, your inflammatory of your immune system will not so super calm example but I can tell you about. I see that a lot is when I have clients and they have these really stressful jobs. They have high paying jobs, they work hard and they retire. And then as soon as they retire, they feel That’s because they’ve been on that high for so long. And then okay, retired. so my triggers my stress triggers are now gone because obviously the job or the bosses or their colleagues was like the main chronic stress issue.

They retire the stress is gone, but their immune system is completely fucked. And it because it got used to that high level of stress and as soon as they were tired, no more stress. They get exposed to I don’t know, the flu or you know, there’s a trigger in their body, a strong disease that just shows up in their bodies, and the immune system can’t fight against it because they got used to this high level of alert. So that’s a common, huge example. So you know, stress will impact the way that you look. It will impact the way that you feel. And when you feel like crap all the time. It will show on your skin and your body’s just going to age and not prepare itself in the ultimate way.

And I’ll just give you a funny story. COVID hits back in 2020, I remember it was such a stressful time because no one really knew what was going on. So we have never been through a situation like that before. So it was really like okay, like what’s gonna happen? So, I remember my mom,  over maybe a couple of weeks of that COVID unknown period of time, she actually developed a bunch of small lines around her lips and she never ever had these lines around her lips. We know we like analyze it before we were like, like, remember like when COVID happened. Because you went through such a high period of stress, it kind up on your skin. You can’t eliminate completely that stress obviously, but managing it will help.

Unfortunately, we don’t live on an island on the ocean, we just have stressful lives. And we just need to find ways to make sure that we really not let it take over the health of our mind, body and soul, you know, all that jazz! So it’s important to have ways that you can actually manage your stress and for us, we are big people that love exercise, gym, pump up that dopamine with that good old exercise! We love that in our family. Some people like to read a book because they can get their minds out of the day to day. Others would like to journal and write things down. It just depends on you. It depends what you like. So find a way that is going to help you manage your stress. Another thing I’m going to say: socialize, guys, it’s so important to socialize today, especially with a bunch of people now work from home and are not exposed to seeing their colleagues and seeing other people and socializing and I’m sorry, but you cannot have a healthy life from your office desk at home all the time! It’s just not healthy. You need to socialize with people. And what’s fun about socializing is that you go have a drink or a cup of coffee with someone, a close friend, and then you guys get to bitch about life together! And it’s healthy to understand that other people are going through these things in life that you are also going through. So, you know, socialize, go out, go see your friends. It’s so important.

So anyways, just to say that you need to find a way to manage your stress and that’s something that we live by daily.

Now, the final one is a little silly, but don’t take life too seriously. Honestly, guys, so I have this model that I now use and I guess what comes with experience with life with you know, going through things in life that are like okay, like, chill. When I have something happening that is serious or not serious, I’m like, is it going to matter? In a year from now? 4 to 5 years from now? Is it going to impact my life? If this thing is still happening a year from now? And most of the time the answer is no. Most of the time it’s no. So now, I’m a lot smarter. I guess that comes with time, but I don’t freak out. I do not freak out with the little things that happen in life, at work, whatever. And I guess that comes with training. With, you know, having more experience with having a business or things like that. We’re talking about business here. But I always ask myself this question. And most of the time the answer is no. And then I just have to respond to whatever’s going on. I don’t react anymore to the things that happen. I tried to make sure to respond instead of reacting, because reacting is just you know, emotional feelings. That’s just temporary. It’s not gonna help me solve the solution that I need to do. So I always respond and not react. And I always make sure that I answer that question: is it going to impact my life in a year? And if it does, we’ll take it more seriously. If not, we just have to do the steps in order to you know, do whatever we need to do. But yeah, we don’t take life so seriously, life is so freakin short guys. You need to enjoy your time on this planet and you know, go ahead and get that serum!

It’s just such a better life with a serum. But yeah, anyways, that’s all I have for you today. Okay guys, welcome back to the podcast. Welcome to this awesome new season. And for the first episode, we thought it would be really fun to have Danielle over to have a discussion and so you can say hello hello everyone weird right we’re having a conversation on the because usually I would do this with my computer!

But um so today we wanted to talk about as the first episode for the new series. The harsh truth of owning a beauty business and that’s why we figured we’d bring Danielle in because she’s How old are you? 85
That would be good marketing though. Right? Right. Yeah, no. So 65 Now 65 now been through many 46 years of aesthetics. Aesthetics. Yeah. So I figured we just go back all the way back to the beginnings, and then we can just see where the conversation goes. If we go back to your were, what, 16, Something like that? And you decided hey, like that’s what I want to do.

I always wanted to be in esthetics and I even worked for a pizzeria illegally and accumulated enough money to buy a chair, a steamer, Luxo lamp and practice and while I was taking my course I was really really really into it. Wow, and what did your like how are your parents? Oh, my mom was disappointed because I had great grades. Yeah, you were good. You have always been super good at school. Yeah. And she was hoping I’d be a doctor or something like that. I thought, no, I’ll own my business. And that’s, I was lucky. I really was fortunate. To know from the start. 

I’ve always said the day of clothes isn’t a decision. It’s not like yeah, it’s gonna work. I worked seven days a week 12 hour days. When I opened at the delta I had to bring my laundry back home with the one of those little trolleys that you know the old lady’s walk around Yeah, with and everybody in the elevator because this was a business building like office building. Yep, that’s for sure.

Oh, my God, that’s really at the very end. Yeah, cuz back then in the 80s 7970s owning a business was not there was no money right. And nobody believes bankers believe in it, but I think I think it’s still it’s still a frickin issue to get money especially if it’s awful. They either they, you know, they screw you over with a really high interest rate because they’re like, I will make money off of this person, or they just simply don’t like they have to add on for a cosigner or something like that. Yeah. Um, yeah, even after, when was it? 25 years.

Oh, yeah. I have to buy new equipment and went to the bank. My husband. That’s so insulting. I was already 11 years in business with numbers through this. So yes, I was insulted. Yeah, I never went back. I always did it. Yeah. You don’t really need to take some notes about the high end equipment. Right. But, you know, for some people that are listening in that in the aesthetic industry, like equipment, machines, their frickin expensive, like people think that oh, you keep all that money that you charge. That’s not true. Most of it goes to all that equipment and thankfully, those companies have access to external financial companies, I guess. Yeah, at higher interest or higher interest rate, though, but at least you can get the money because, you know, at that point, you’re like, Well, I’m gonna go to a bank and get laughed at or am I going to use a higher interest machine? Exactly. So we Anyway, go to the bank, you have to have a whole bunch of papers for them to your projections and plan and it’s very hard to do that when you’re working five days a week, 10 hour days. So you figured okay, now I’ll try with a company or a company, but initially after 12 years ago, yeah.

After 21 years of business. I wanted to be out of the traditional aesthetics. I want to go into paramedical and I invested 175,000 And I had to pay it in five years.

Before I did that I rented a machine. So if the typical image so before you bought the skin tightening the laser hair removal, all that stuff. EMax, you rented, there was there was an option with another company to rent the machine per day. So we actually built the demand first. We rented it every single day, like a couple days a month. It was a day a month and it became two days a month and dedicate three days a month. $1,000 a day. Yeah. So by the time I got to, like during the course of maybe just a year, yeah, exactly. Yeah. After a year, three days. 1000 Okay, like, I can’t pay my own machine at that point. Yeah. And then you have the flexibility of having it yes, on the time it was, you know, everybody could see what improvements you know how the goal where you were getting the results, the results. So it was, yeah, that’s the way I did it. Yeah. And that’s smart, because you actually built it. I’ve always always been very careful with my funds. I have to analyze everything from A to Z before I could plunge and it’s important if you go wrong.

 So what would you say is one of the, like, a harsh truth for people that want to get into it? They’re like, oh, I want to get into aesthetics. It’ll be fun, though. What would be like a like a hey, you got to think about this. Before you get into it. What would be one of those things you have to love what you do eat sleep. You have to always think what next? What next?

But in my days it was better to call, do newsletters, and then you know, events. Yeah. But to build your clientele. You really have to work hard, you have to work you have to work hard, but you have to love it. You have to think okay, I did this next time. I’ll do that. You know, and just, that’s that’s what gets you going. Yeah, and then the clients, you appreciate the work you do, by seeing the clients being rewarded and happy. Yeah, they love it and work your files. I’ve had clients.

So you know, when they were 30, and now they’re in the 70s and it’s like every month. Wow, it’s amazing. It’s amazing, but you know, you have to keep those people going with results, which is crazy with trends. And I’m not I’m not trendy. I mean, yeah, so I like things to remain for a long time. Yeah. And to prove themselves before I jump in. Yeah. So saying it like to say like if you want to go into a career and aesthetics, whether you want to be a business owner or not. You have to really love and passionate about what you do because you otherwise you’re screwed to survive, you won’t survive. No, because the first big thing you’ll have is you’re gonna give up or you won’t be motivated enough to continue because you don’t want to it’s like okay when you lose your staff because you know, I’ve been through a few of those about that. and I actually I do keep my staff relatively new.

But there was a phase where I was pregnant, baby and you don’t have to take time off. and I had a staff of nine and six left after a month of giving birth. So I had to put my sleeves up. Go to work. Yeah. And that’s what I ended up doing. My mom was there then for my first baby and was there to help me. You know, I lived upstairs. 

Yeah, so for those who don’t know the history, they bought the building that their business is now in and we actually lived on the main wall on the other two floors and the business was on the main floor. So she was never too far from the family. No, and that was the goal. Because when I rented at the delta for 11 years 10 And plus one because I couldn’t find a place. I wanted to live and work in the same place and have a sitter from when I went to work at 11 When my husband came home, because I work till nine. Yeah, that’s another thing. It’s another thing that a lot of people don’t. when they start in that industry. they’re like, oh, I’ll just work 10 to 3 or like, and that’s like guys, you have to WORK.

So, coming back to the 70s you picked your career? And how like your friends, your surroundings? How did like, Oh, you’re gonna be the aesthetician! Well, yeah, like how was the reaction to the people? When you said like, Hey, this is what I want to do and like I’m going for it. What was the reception from your entourage? Most of my friends. Were going to be secretaries because it was that’s how it was. Yeah. or they were going to be you know, lawyers and doctors. where they had a family where they could have the money to afford take them Yeah. that far or knew the connections to get there. in those days you needed to have connect connection. Okay, so, now listen, I had people come in, my mom’s get services done.

It’s funny. When you tell people that you do something that’s not really the norm. Maybe today it’s a little different. There’s more options. There we go.
Pension, what about this? What about that? Well, I’ll worry about it. No plan for it. Exactly. Yeah, exactly. And that’s what I did. Yeah.
And it’s, I remember, there was many, many times when I decided to, you know,
work more in business.
I was like, that’s what I’m gonna do.
I had friends laugh at me. I had even clients were under the names but we didn’t have clients and you know, it’s I don’t know who I’m talking about. But we even had clients that were like, What a waste. I know. And it’s like they know they’re Yeah, yeah, the difference the perception sometimes it’s a little insulting because they think that Oh, you just do like fluff fluff facials and like, nails no but
you know, above and beyond. It’s, it’s fine.
Because you matter. It doesn’t matter, intially. Yeah,
love what you do. That’s the thing. Most important. Yeah. Yeah, I’m really Oh yeah, for sure. Believe in yourself. You believe in the work you do. And if you don’t, if you don’t have that, you’re not you’re screwed. You’re screwed.
I mean, it’s kind of nice. Like we like we’re actually recording a podcast episode. And then you’re like, Oh, what do you do? Oh, I have
like other activities to like, promote our business and it goes, far we have to do because but but yeah, so okay. So coming back to the theme. So passionate, you have to be passionate, you have to be ready to work. You have to heartstrings and a lot of people believe that you just sit on your ass and just business is gonna come true. What else comes to mind? Like financial is another big one like with any business, right? Financial for sure. Yeah. Someone who start let’s say someone who’s starting obviously you didn’t come from money either. So how did you? You know,
you got to work right? Yeah.
So you get an initial investment for your initial investment. Yes.
Good Old Days. My father had cosign for three, which I paid in a year, and then made another loan for 10 grand you’re talking 79 year? Yeah, no, that’s a lot. So that was Yeah. And we made that if I did another one each time there was equipment. I’m expanding. I need the money. And that was that was okay. Yeah. And you do have to plan you have to plan how much will this cost? How much how much inventory will inventory?
Crazy with six of each and when we say inventory, we mean pre sales? Yeah, we mean the retail that’s on our shelves.
You know, if you go with three lines and six of each, it’s like, you gotta pay that inventory. Yeah. And it’s not gonna move unless you have the volume and work to it. But when you begin to, it’s not like that. And you really kind of get trapped, because there’s all kinds of sales person that comes to you and you haven’t really branched out you might want to take a new course with a certain line, which will guide you Yeah, for sure. But you might want to do something different. And cost.
So so what you did is that every time you borrowed money, it was like chunks of money every time. A five year. Yeah, pretty much every five years. Yeah. Until I moved to a live stream. And then what would you do? Because I mean, I think realistically speaking business is a roller coaster right when you got good times or bad times and it’s always it’s always the same like that. So in the bad times. What was your like? If business was slower than usual or something happened to stop bleeding River? What was your go to plan
to like get okay, like, you have to look at your financial got cut and you have to look at your financials and see okay, where can i Where can I take this fund and put it somewhere else? So this area so that I can continue working? Yeah, as little as a bus strike in the good old days in Ottawa, that like because I wanted, yeah, I borrow $500 and my grandpa Yeah, I just opened
Well, already for you, and that will ask you how long that was carrying me a couple of months. Just 500 bucks.
On my rent was high. As far as miscellaneous Yeah, just like extra I gotta be feel. I don’t have this income coming in. I just immediately did evenings and stuff promotion. Yeah.
So you got to think fast.
I would know I honestly would know how to handle it today. Opening a business.
Everything costs and you got to work hard to get that standout? Well, not just the standout. I think it’s more like your bills are high. So you need to try to match that amount of money that comes in. So you got work. And the one thing I didn’t do, I didn’t take Yeah, so that’s another thing. A lot of people like they want to pay themselves 100 grand a year starting
five years, five years. Is a big chunk of it was a big chunk, personally but a little bit of money aside, just out Yeah, I was working. Yeah. And it was like I was living sharing with Danielle those days. Yeah, department. Yeah, it was gonna happen. Yeah, we cooked all our stuff together. It would make it so much cheaper than cheese. So no,
that’s true. That’s a harsh truth. A
lot of people don’t know about it. It’s like, yeah, at least a couple of leaves a couple of years. Yeah. Unless you want to explode and like business is great. Yeah, fine. But you got to be realistic. Or unless you’re inheriting a business from from family. You can go ahead and it’s already established established. But to start from scratch. You’re not going to have a profit for
five years. Yeah, usually, at reasonable times, I would take $100 Because I needed something that Yeah, it wasn’t. It was pretty amazing.
Yeah, it’s hard to have a business, that’s for sure. But the rewards are high. So you have to have the personality for it. Yeah. And it’s funny because as kids we never really knew what was going on. Like you guys had you guys bought this huge building that was back then. Almost $400,000 You know, back then in the 90s, which would be one like, like, a million plus today. Like if you were to buy it now. 1.5. So I don’t know how you manage that. But the everybody was looking at us like
Are you back to the people
that said hey, what do you want to see out of the pension thing like what it is? Yeah, exactly. The rents alone are great. So you just have to be smart with your money.

Oh, man, yeah. Oh, another thing that I that I wanted to bring up is the constant. I don’t know how to say this. But like you always want to constantly learn in our industry going forward. But like you always have to make sure that you you know, even just like ingredients, there’s always more study that come out, you know, like vitamin eight, like we’re right now we’re obsessed right with vitamin A. And before because we didn’t know so we were like it’s just a scam. Like, you know, we have this like, opinion about images. Yeah, but now, now we went through training and but we did take 19 courses.
That’s nothing No, exactly. It’s a lot of course, yeah. But it gives us a direction that
direction. So we could probably bring the news now because you know, when you’re here it’s another good opportunity for people to
find out. But we did it. Okay, we are so many things. Yeah.
So we officially bought the northwest from canula it’s a system. It’s a new system. And there’s two different kinds of IPOs. And there’s the fracks there’s a laser resurfacing fracks on it. So we’re going to launch it officially in September, we’re gonna have a huge event, and it’s gonna be interesting. But again, that’s something that’s costing us $150,000 You know, yes. Yeah. And a lot of people don’t register. Oh, yeah, we’re ready for it. First of all,
our old Emacs.
I mean, it’s I mean, it still works fine. But before one day, they’ll be like, Oh, no normal. What are we gonna do now? We won’t be able to open it. So it’s no longer on? Warranty. So yeah, that kind of bugged me each time. And I think it’s still very it’s still very working well, but it’s the chance that we’re taking electronics electronics on the machine and to pay to repair it is not worth it at this point. It’s just not so I think we’re ahead of the game. And yeah, and that’s going to be exciting. We’re super clipboards we have to get training, more training, more training. And yeah, it’s going to help our clientele in a totally totally different direction. Yeah. I really, really love the more medical angle that we’re going towards. It’s really really fun art within our within our within our scope of practice, obviously, but it’s just a putter for the longest time we were so we did everything right like we did nails waxing, traditional facials and then we got into like pyramid but we still did the rest right? And then like as COVID happen as like we got like smaller and smaller in the niche treatments that we do now. We’re really like, Yeah, we don’t do we don’t do anything anymore. Like we only do face. Exactly. Oh, my face mostly is anti aging and or transformative. Yeah. There’s so much going on. Like in the last six months, we invested so much money in the business. We bought the Vizio skin analysis machine which is balm. It’s still I’m sure we’re still not using it completely to its full capacity yet, but we need to bring each client exactly take time so for the people that are listening to this he has a it’s a medical skin analysis machine it takes three scanner Yeah, it takes three angles pictures and then it gives you scores on how the health of your skin is it’s just it’s very it’s an in depth skin Analysis Machine. Yeah, so scanner for before and after porn after the meeting before now that we’re taking Yeah, exactly the next year or so. What the after will be just to give you an idea because when we talk about the harsh truth of having a business many, many cups cost that machine and Canadian was almost 30 grand. And then the Nautilus that we got was very expensive as well. So we’re looking at almost 200k Right? They’re both equipment. That’s just equipment. This was not even like salary, products. We invested in environmental, which was another, you know, so I think that’s something that you have to like if you’re listening to this and you’re like, oh, I want to do this. It looks so much fun. It’s fun. If you’re motivated and if you’re you’re you’re planning your stuff accordingly, but it takes has to be the right fit for you and you have to be able to pay for it without being hungry. Like you really have to really well plan your new thing Are we ready? Oh yeah. So now we’re launching three different things. Different things I know there’s alleged him too and then we go so we got the LED you guys hear us talk about the LED all the time we got we started with a standalone pro panel. And then we were doing so much that we were like okay, we need another one. So we got the we got the dumbbell up so we don’t want so that we could easily put them in the treatments when we used it. So that’s fine. Yeah. So that’s three new things plus the product. We’re done now. First of all about marketing and you know, events and stuff. Exactly. Yeah. Yes. It’s pretty exciting. How do your older client like the ones that have have followed you for that long they’ve seen the evolution everything. What do you hear from them? When they see all these things happening within the business? Like what’s the feedback from the old timers that are coming in, depending on their age? Most of them are like okay, well that’s good for me. That’s that’s really, overall the reaction. Yeah, some I mean, some are getting 79 Oh, my God really should do something.
Or I’m not willing to go into that, but maybe it is the product. Yeah, exactly. So it’s just it keeps them on their toes. Yeah, it gives them options if you want
to take it, but there was a client the other day, I don’t remember who it was. She told you. I’m gonna say her name because I want to anonymous but she came and she said, Hey, you guys like really? I’ve always evolved. I remember. Yes, I remember. Yes. But yeah, cuz she, she was taught you were working on her notice of it. Yeah. And she hasn’t been a client for that long. No, I don’t know where she got her Intel. But well, I think looking at our website, all the things that are happening in last three, four years. Yes. Yeah. Because she hasn’t been no, no. But that’s pretty nice to hear. Yeah, yeah. Yes. That’s that’s a common that we get often when we do events with our members and it’s no fun membership guys why? That’s another that’s another thing but you know, the clients feel very, they see that we work hard, and they see that we work for their benefit people. Yeah, exactly everything we do. We do work for their benefit. Because now we are programmed. Personalized program is like you’ve got a six month program for you. Yeah. And then from there, you can just get Yeah, you can decide you can move on but there’s always stuff to do. It’s always tough to do for sure. So they feel the way we work. You know, we specialize in making treatment plans, at least six months. That’s the minimum timeframe that we do and then we kind of set them up for success but their skin and then after we got to a certain point we do okay, well maintenance do we tackle something else? Like they feel a piano have to do I think you’re like literally, they’re welcome. And they’re well, they’re, we’re directing them towards what they need. And they see the results too. So and automatically they will go and really some people is like okay, let me think here for a minute because we do it all. Some people do it all some people do. Yeah. You know your steps, baby step baby steps because we don’t want to actually, how many times have you said you might not yet know Yeah, just go yeah, baby step baby steps. The skin can’t even take it too much. It’s too much, you know? But yeah, this was one of our job. So I think, is there anything else that you’d like to add? That we can talk about? That comes to mind when it comes to opening a business? owning a business? Get a good accountant, a good lawyer. People that will coach you that you don’t know it all? But that’s the thing like they don’t teach you. Sorry, but in school, you learn the basics. Yes, you don’t even learn business stuff at all. Not at all. So I think about if especially if you want to be an owner and have a business, you’re not just an aesthetician, no, no, you’re a business. And you need to know your business. Yeah, I mean, put your hands in it and understand counting business. You need to know where you are, and how much more you can play with it or your projections. But you really need to be well surrounded by people and lots of times. You just need people for referrals, referrals, yeah, friends. That was very important to bookkeeper or accountant. Lawyer. Yeah. Will help you good bankers. You can find one. Yeah, they’re hard to find. They’re hard to find. Yeah. But again, I think it’s building you meet someone and then you build a relationship with them. And then eventually you’re like, okay, like let’s do business. But
the key to all that is have all your tools ready, every single entity, there’s no excuse. Now that’s true, which is available information.
And then at one point you have to invest in Now you do have a certain amount of capital if you can put some money aside for a while working somewhere else. And then you’d have that cushion. I always had a question. Yeah, always. Yeah. Well, you know, I came from no money. So if I draw on your back, so I always was very, very much a Christian person. Yeah. Well, you taught me well, because well, it’s like remember back in the I think it was for your 25th you were working with a coach but like, you got all your logos down on your towels, like you had your website like I don’t remember like that was new. I don’t remember what was called like what she did. But back then coaching was not a thing but like she was she was like, just helping me. People evolve into the market. Okay, like I didn’t have a website yet. I didn’t have a sign up site, because that was expensive. I didn’t have Yeah, I had shirts, you know, personalized cheat sheets, personalized accounts. That was more about and then helping me instead of doing letters, helping me with the internet, and events. And that was the beginning of the social media. Right? Oh my god. It was way before you know it before. Like, at that moment with your five what year was that? 24. That was 99 for Yeah, so there was no social media back then. Social media. Facebook came out like 2005. And then the social media that we know today was like maybe 10 years ago. Yeah. So just working with a computer. technology, technology. Yeah, technology, which, you know, you sit there and you go okay, what do I do? Computers? Yeah. Yeah, so she helped me a lot with that and then then it was fine. Then I lost almost nothing guys. It’s like change. People don’t like change and will now people don’t want to work. So that’s a whole different issue. Surprising. Yeah. I don’t know where that’s gonna go. But I don’t know. Like I was saying, I was saying to you the other day, it’s like, I think today we’re in a time that if you work really hard, and you’re someone who is willing to work hard, you’re gonna succeed a lot better than the other people that don’t want to work. You know, of course, it’s because people are just, I want to say something but invest in yourself. You got it. You’re the only person that’s responsible for Yeah, as far as the business. You’re the only person that’s responsible for you. Exactly. You can not help but in mostly you’re the 1% Deaf while there are good people there are Oh, yeah. And I have kept and I’ve had some of my stuff come back three times. Yeah, exactly. Looking back for seven years in a row.
But yeah, that’s something you learned. And sometimes it’s not easy. It’s not No,
I think that’s the thing I don’t like to it’s hard. It’s hard to I remember when you started Yeah, 10 years ago, more than 10 years now. We always say we’re getting older. So it’s like now it’s like 1213 years ago,
15 years ago. It was great because your minds were Yeah, you were there for anything that would be happening. And that changed a lot.
That’s changed a lot and I still think you can find people like that. Yeah, but yeah, but it just it takes it takes time and you need to be I don’t know. Don’t take people for granted. No, no. I mean, for sure need to be a little more conscious of their body language or feeling like so people. Staffing as a whole should have a whole other like diploma, or like a course of like having to manage people because that’s super hard. And yeah, it can be hard. It can it can be hard. It actually was easy. I’d say 75% Sure. And then you have that percentage. Yeah, there are times where you do need them and it’s not gonna happen. Yeah. And then you have to find anything better. Exactly. You know, so it’s, everything happens for a reason. Everything happens for a reason. It’s part of the business. You gotta roll with it. You know, there’s just yeah, the roller coaster is not we love it for sure. So you can cover we’ve covered everything. I think so. Yeah. Where do you see your business going in 10 years. We’re gonna close it with that.
Boy, baby, the whole building? Yeah.
That’s a long term plan that’s actually working on so just give me some time guys. It’s gonna be a long process. But yeah, the image would be to use the entire building for business, but we won’t say what we’re going to do with it because that would be to reveal some secrets and pretty nitty gritty nitty gritty things but yeah, but that’s Yeah, I think that’s where you could go I’ll be there. Yeah, it’ll be there all night. I’m just checking in my god 75.
People really aren’t. People like working for us because we’re pretty chill. Actually pretty chill people but we have our ways, but we’re pretty again businesses business. No, exactly. Happy, happy Tuesday you guys this is Emilie as usual better known as the Meta  Fairy. So you can expect you know just wonderful things that night we really wanted to throw a fun night to think record because we’ve been in business for over 43 years. That is a long time and we really wanted to throw a special glam night we’re all gonna be dressed up we’re all gonna be looking fairly beautiful and chic. Not that we’re not beautiful usually but you know a little bit more, a little bit more “pezzazz” and regular day at work.

So we’re going to have some public some wine, some cheese, we’re going to have swag bags, we’re going to have three big baskets. I’m going to talk about that a little bit later. You’re going to also have a really fun update on what is new at Meta.

Hello everyone, welcome back to the podcast. Emilie here better known as The Meta Fairy and today we have a really special episode. We are talking about vitamin A. If you guys follow us on social media, if you are one of our clients, you know that April is out is all about vitamin A because we did go into a new purchase. We got into a new medical grade line that the cornerstone ingredient is vitamin A. And before a deep dive into vitamin A, its benefits and just for you to understand a little bit more about how it works on the skin because there’s a lot of misconception and things that people believe about vitamin A that you know even myself then this is the main reason why we went into this that are simply not true. So the reason why Danielle and I decided to invest in this beautiful wonderful medical grade skincare line is because it’s funny it’s because we you know, we see a lot of clients daily we and we noticed that a lot of people are obsessed with taking prescription retinoids if you don’t know what prescription retinoids is, it’s retinoic acid. It is the strongest form of vitamin A that you have to get through a prescription through either your doctor or your dermatologist. And every time I treat someone that has currently a prescription of that strength it’s their skin is just completely stripped. It is read it is flaky, they can only use it once a week because it’s too strong. And that’s an we’re gonna deep dive into this but it’s what’s the point of using something once a week when it’s when vitamin A is a vitamin that you should use every single day. So this is why we you know, we’ve been looking for this line for about a year now. So if you know us and you’re currently a client of ours, you know that we are very very picky. We’re very research everything that we get into we want to make sure it’s not just a trend thing. We want to make sure that it’s based on science. And it just went really well with the way that we work with our philosophy with what we believe in. So I will have further podcast episodes on the line, but I just wanted to start and talk about vitamin A. Because these are things that everyone should know about.

So did you know that vitamin A is of the greatest deficiency in the world, most people are unaware that they suffer from a chronic localized deficiency of vitamin A. Vitamin A is also very light sensitive. So as soon as our skin is exposed to the sun or the rays, if the vitamin A is kind of sucked out of the skin cells and this is why we developed photo aging. So we really do constantly need to use vitamin A daily. So a lot of you will probably tell me, yeah, but Emily, vitamin A is super UV sensitive. So this is where we get into the science of the different forms of vitamin A. Because yes, you are correct, retinol and retinoic acid. So retinoic acid would be the most active, the most strong, and that would be the prescription strength. And again, keep in mind, you don’t have to go all the way super strong in order to get results and I will explain to you why in just a second. So yes, you are correct the alcohol form of vitamin A, which would be retinol and the acid form of vitamin A which would be retinoic acid are both UV sensitive so you are correct. However, there is one more form that is not UV sensitive, and that is the esters, so those are the oils of form of vitamin A. So you have retinyl proprionate, retinyl palmitate and retinyl acetate. So these are the lower strength forms of vitamin A but just because they are lower, it doesn’t mean they are not doing their job. And this is where it gets super interesting. This skin will naturally transform any type of form any type of form any form of vitamin A into retinoic acid within the skin cell. So as soon as you put on either retinol acetate retinol palmitate retinol, the skin will naturally transform it to retinoic acid and as we know retinoic acid is the form of the prescription. So let me ask you this. If you lose vitamin A, from your skin cells daily, and you have to replenish it daily in order to have a healthy healthy skin cell. Why would you use a strength that you can only apply once a week when you can use another form that you can apply daily that will replenish your skin cell and increase the increase the health of your skin every single day without stripping your skin and you’ll have the same exact benefits than using it once a day prescription wise. Think about that for a second. If you’re someone who’s been interested in using a prescription strength because everyone is doing it. And you all know that you know for us we are not we are not people that are easily influenced by trends. We don’t we don’t care about that. What makes sense what is scientifically proven, that works on the scan. This is why when we do new things or we get into new technologies, we research the crap out of everything because we want to make sure that what we’re offering to our clientele is actually legit, because unfortunately in our industry, there’s a lot of trends. There’s a lot of floo floo stuff that just pops out. And it’s it’s it’s just it’s just not our it’s not our thing to go into floo floo. Things. We want to offer you the best scientifically backed up services and products so that you can have results.

So if you thought about what I asked you, why would you use something that only once a week and that will irritate you to the max and I’ll explain to you why you guys get irritated. So a lot of people will experience that sort of that side effect. It’s called a retinoid reaction. And usually it’s marked by redness of the skin exfoliation so flaking mal breakouts uncomfortable skin tight skin, just overall like a reaction skin just not something that’s really pleasant. So a retinoid reaction occurs when the skin is too deficient of vitamin A to metabolize it effectively. Okay, let that sink in. A retinoid reaction occurs when the skin is too deficient of vitamin A to metabolize it. So your skin cell by receiving that very strong retinoic acid prescription strength directly will be like oh my god what is this? It’s kind of like, okay, this is gonna be a really silly example. But if if this can help you understand? It’s like, let’s talk about booze. Okay? It’s because it’s just easy and people understand it. And so you’ve got your beers. You’ve got your wine, you have your liquors, and then you have like the strong stuff. Okay. So, if you’re someone that’s not used to having a regular drink, obviously having a shot of vodka when you’ve never had strong liquor is going to just bring you down, right? You’re just gonna be, you’re gonna have two shots, you’re gonna be like, holy, and that’s it, you’re gone. Whereas if you start with your little beer, slowly and just have one or two it won’t smash your face. Okay? Same example, with vitamin A. I know this is so silly, but it just it paints you a picture. Okay. Same idea with vitamin A.
If you’re going to use vitamin A start low and go slow to build up within the skin. The How can I say this? This the skin cell will get used to it and it’ll be able to take more and more and more as you build it. That’s why with the brand that we we decided to go with they kind of have like a step up system. So you’re always constantly graduating to a stronger strength of vitamin A within the products. So you start low and you go slow. And as your skin cells get used to having regular vitamin A intake then you can have stronger, stronger, stronger, stronger as you move along. In the stepup system. So it’s super smart because it gets your skin cells to be healthier with every bottle that you get. So it kind of shows you an example with the with the alcohol thing. If you go straight to the shots, you’re just going to be on your on your bum and it’s just not going to be your body’s just not used to it. Whereas if you just start low with your little beer, and you slowly make your way up, it won’t be as bad. Might not be the perfect example but it kind of paints you a little picture. Now, a lot of people believe that vitamin A will make your skin thinner and that’s a very common. I think that’s a very common myth. Because back in the day retinas they weren’t like it wasn’t the ingredient to use. But that’s just because they there wasn’t a lot of scientific backup. To understand how vitamin A works on the skin. So let me break the myth down a little bit for you. So yes, the skin the skin will not get thinner. However, however, when a retinoid reaction occurs the skin does because does become thinner. But it’s very tempting. It’s not permanent, because it’s just a transient reaction, right? So the thinner skin is reversed when the reaction subsides and the vitamin A receptors are more actively absorbing vitamin A again. Okay, so again, vitamin A will not make the skin thinner with time if you don’t have a reaction, because for example, if you’re using prescription retinoids, then yes, obviously your skin will become thinner because you’re having a reaction constantly to it. But the fact is that vitamin A will always make the skin thicker and healthier. However, when a retinoid reaction occurs the skin does become thinner. But as it is a transient reaction it does not permanently damage to skin. So it’s only if you have a reaction. So if if let’s say you’re listening right now and you use your prescription, you have a prescription and you use it once or twice a week. And you always have a reaction every time then yes, your skin is getting thinner because of that reaction until you build it up. But the problem was with the prescription, it’s so difficult to build it up if you’re only using it once a week. Right? It’s like going to the gym once a week. It’s hard to build up your muscles and your cardio and all the good benefits of working out if you’re only going once a week, right? So a little bit every day will give you the same benefits if not more, because everyday you’re feeding vitamin A to your skin cells. And that’s what they need. They need daily intake of vitamin A kind of like vitamin D daily intake of vitamin D being exposed to the sun because it gives you vitamin D is a daily thing that needs to happen because it influences your your mood, your hormones, you know all that jazz. So it’s the same idea of of vitamin A. You need to start low, go slow, but have daily applications of vitamin A you may think, Well what if I have rosacea? What if I have you know, dermatitis or something that’s in inflammation related. So again, anyone that has that type of skin condition is because there is some there’s an imbalance within your skin. And Rosacea is very you know, Rosie socials, it’s not if you have it and you’re listening. It sucks, I know. But there are ways to control your rosacea and any skin cell whether it’s whether you have rosacea, dermatitis and all that jazz, actually do they do need vitamin A, just the lower dose to start with, and it will absolutely build the strength of your skin cells in order to be more resilient. And as we know if you have dermatitis, for example, that’s an inflammation of your epidermis, your first layer of your skin that you see. It’s an inflammation of that of that layer. So and that is because your moisture barrier is compromised in some way. And yes, it is related to like somewhat an auto immune reaction, but it’s not it’s not as dramatic as it sounds but feeding it a low a very low dose of vitamin A will increase its strength and its resilience and it will help the condition of your skin if you have a skin condition like that. So when you have a deficiency in vitamin A What does it look like? So a deficiency in the skin. You’ve got many signs that can pop up that can develop so you’ve got some damage which is the pretty obvious one. sun damage, loss of laxity, you’ve got wrinkles, roughness, irregular pigmentation, sallow skin, elastosis and even breakouts. So did you know that restoring vitamin A through diet takes up to seven days but restoring Vitamin E through topical application takes a few hours. So when you hear me talk about skins, supplements and things like that constantly, it’s the same idea. And this proves my point. If you’re taking collagen, for example, because you want it to reach your skin, it doesn’t make sense because it’ll take way longer and it will not give you the effects of a topical application for replenishing collagen. Okay, so when you eat something, it’s good of course it’s good for your body. It’s good for your internal organs. It’s good for, you know, getting all the nutrients and things like that that’s that’s fine, but don’t expect it to magically change your skin. By taking it taking something orally, you got to keep in mind that topical application will be the quickest way to restore something on your skin. Okay? So these are the following things that can happen to your skin when you have a vitamin A deficiency and then you’re probably thinking, Oh my God, I’ve got everything or a lot of us do have these things as we get older. Well, this is where the daily application of vitamin A will really really help your skin. There’s many key benefits to vitamin A. It is it’s really known as a normalizing skin vitamin. So it forms the basis of a normal, healthy and well functioning skin. So it will promote natural moisturizing factor. It will promote a healthy dermis and epidermis. It will promote collagen and elastin. It will support skin immunity. It will help improve pigmentation and it will also help improve problematic skin conditions. So for people that go on Accutane, Accutane is just a very strong form of vitamin A. Yeah, so you can see a little bit the link of using a lower dosage every single day how we can benefit your skin instead of using a prescription strength once a week, because it won’t regularize it won’t normalize your skin cells because it’s just too strong once a week, and obviously you can’t use it every single day. You would lose your your first your first layer of your skin like it would just be completely burnt. So using something daily, a lower dose of vitamin A will give you a really, really healthy and functioning skin. Now I am back from Barbados and it was amazing. It was a really chill week in the Caribbean. It was such a good time. I’m, I’m very well rested. It was nice to feel the sun.

I don’t know if you guys are aware, but the sun is actually really good for you. I know we say all the time, especially as skin therapists that you know the sun is dangerous and it’s really bad for your skin. And the truth is the sun is actually really good for you. It’s actually a good trigger for your dopamine levels. So you know how in the wintertime we have a lot less light and a lot of people suffer from. I think it’s called seasonal depression because they’re not getting enough light. So a lot of people can get those red lights because they do trigger dopamine levels in your brain. And there’s some tricks you can follow. Like when you wake up you should expose yourself and your eyes to you should go outside. You should look at the sun and you should, you know expose yourself to the light as early as possible when you get up so that your dopamine levels are triggered. This is not you know, this is stuff that I’ve researched. I like to listen to the Huberman lab. He’s really really interesting. I’ll link it below if you guys are interested in knowing how light sunlight and types of light actually trigger really good things within your body.

Another another thing I can say is that when you’re when we’re in the summer everything grows much quicker right like our our skin, our skins dead skin cell cycle we have a lot more dead skin cell builds up. We are nails our hair, everything just grows much faster. Well it’s because the UVB actually has. It does influence those growth so it is good in a way now I mean you can go the other extreme and talk about skin cancer and all those things which is very accurate but just keep in mind that having sun exposure is not entirely all bad. You just have to you just have to be careful and you know you got to find that sweet spot so you don’t burn yourself off outside and enjoy the benefits of light. So I will link below this episode from the humor lab. It’s very, very interesting. He’s a neuroscientist so he’s, he’s quite interesting to listen to if you guys would like to learn about these types of things, but anyways, so sun exposure is actually really good for your dopamine levels. So make sure that you do go outside every day, or stand in your windows just to get those rays hitting your skin. But I think actually thinking about it, I think a lot of windows do have filters for the UVB anyways. So I don’t know if you would get the st benefit as going outside directly for a period of 10 minutes of the sun is shining.

But anyways, moving on. So had a great trip. It was really really fun. I wanted to talk about something that was in theme for me last week. And it was tips on how to protect your skin as much as possible when you’re going away in a sunny destination. So it’s not as easy as you would think. Because you know you’re you’re on holidays right so it’s very easy to let things just slip up.

But I will help you on the following things. So how to prep your skin for the South. There’s a few things that you should think about. You gotta stop using your actives, especially if you’re going like in the Caribbean or somewhere that’s really really sunny. Not talking about like necessarily Paris or London but really like Caribbean’s you’re going to be on the beach, you’re going to be hanging out in the ocean. You’re going to be in the sun all the time.

You’re going to want to be careful with your actives. So your retinol, your prescription Retinoids, put that stuff aside because it does make your skin a lot more sensitive to UV rays. And what happens is if you’re not diligent about putting on your sunscreen every two hours and wearing a hat, you’re you will probably have some hyperpigmentation that’s going to come to the surface. And you’re going to have other issues that you’re going to have to deal with when you come back home. So make sure that you stop using your retinol, your prescription retinoids and your acids as well. I mean, I’m doing like a very extreme thing here. I know some people are super careful in the sun and that’s fine. But generally speaking, you don’t want to use your intense glycolic acids your you know all these really strong actives when you’re in the south and a week before you leave because you want to make sure that you desensitize your skin to UV rays. What you’re gonna do while you’re there is you’re going to keep the hydration coming. It’s very, very important to keep that hydration level up. Because the sun, the ocean and all that jazz will dehydrate your skin so easily. You know when you get a sunburn and you start peeling, that’s you know, I mean, that’s because of the sunburn but because your skin is in need of water as well. So you want to make sure you keep that moisture replenished every single day. So make sure that you have hydration, a good serum that you can bring with you to just treat your skin at night, maybe not during the day because during the day you’re going to focus on protection and on sun protection. So at night you want to repair your skin, you want something that’s going to hydrate and calm your skin to repair everything that has been going on during the day on your skin. So you’re going to slack on your actives before you leave you’re not going to use them while you’re away. You’re going to focus focus on hydration.

Now while you’re there. I’ve done this I haven’t done this before. This is the first trip that I’ve done this I had a beautiful hat. And I’m not a hat person. Like I love caps. I’m a cap person. I can pull it off sporty look, you know I’ve got the head for it. But a hat like a nice little hat. I’ve never really liked the image of me with like a nice little hat. But I went to homesteads before we left I was shopping with my mom and I saw this really nice blue hat. And I was like, I’ll give it a try. Standing out from all the beige hats, right? And I put it on and it looks fabulous on my head. So I was like Okay, done. Do it. Bring it and you know what? I actually wore it for probably the best part of the holiday maybe the last few days. I was kind of swimming more but every time you went out for an outing during the day we were doing excursions and things like that. I was wearing my beautiful hat and I did not burn. Of course I was wearing powder. I was wearing sunscreen on my face. But when hat is one to help a lot your hairline. So you know as you get older you’ve got these random moles that are starting to come up around your hairline. It’s because most of the time we’re not really diligent enough to put on our Sun powder or sunscreen creams on the edge of our hairline and don’t forget that your head like the skin on your head is exposed all the time to the sun. And a lot of people sometimes do have moles that tend to pop up on their on their heads. And I’ve seen that before on clients, they had to remove a chunk of hair because they had a melanoma or something cancerous that was developing on their skull. So having a hat is really really important if you’ve never had a hat before when you went down south or even in the summer here. If you know it’s gonna be a really strong summer day you’re out and about wear hat are actually super fashionable. And they look pretty cute minute so wear a hat!

On my face I wear powder. I’m just for those of you who have the color science powder, I’m sorry, but it’s the best darn protection for your face. Unless you’re someone who likes to put on a cream in your face and I am not. I don’t like putting on cream in my face. Especially sunscreen. I do have a nice one in Guinot the SPF 30 It is lovely. But when I’m in the sun and I’m sweaty and I’m just like I wouldn’t about I don’t feel like putting on a cream in my face. I just put on a powder and it sticks to the skin and it works so in my face and hairline. I do the powder and the rest of my body I do cream.

Now. Two types of creams you can get you can have the chemical production and you can have the mineral protection. We have in color science they do have a body one it is a liquid. We have the powder for the face and we have the body one that is a cream. The only thing I don’t love about cream forms of mineral protection is that I just feel like it doesn’t go in as well as the chemical one and I know that’s the whole purpose of it. The minerals just stay on top of the skin. That’s the whole point they do work. They really do work they I feel like they work better than the chemical ones because the the chemical ones will absorb the UV rays and transform it into the heat type thing and throw it out there. So it absorbs the heat into your skin. Whereas the mineral one will completely filter it out and bounce it back out. So it doesn’t even penetrate. So it’s normal that the cream format is going to feel kind of not sticky, but you can feel it on your skin. It’s like well, it’s never going to go in. Well that’s the whole point of a mineral protection is that it’s going to stay on top. It doesn’t penetrate and it really bounces the UV rays back out there. So I’ve used both but I still prefer the chemical one for the body just because I don’t know. I just prefer it for my body. I don’t look white.

Yeah, I know it’s not the best people will generally speaking I think mineral is way better. But for the body, you know, I’ll put the mineral in my face, but I’ll keep the chemical for the body. Now, what happens if you get a sunburn? Well, you guys all know in the Caribbean. The the sunburns are really bad. And what you’re going to do is that you’re going to make sure that you bring a rash guard with you. So if you die if you guys don’t know what a rash guard is, you it’s like the surfing shirts, the sun protection shirts, I call them rash guards, but maybe there’s another word for them. But you can swim with them and it’ll protect your arms and your back. And that way if you already have a sunburn which happened to my you know, my husband put on sunscreen in my back and he didn’t do it really well. So my whole back was fine but I had stretches around where my my bathing suit if he didn’t go underneath he went around. So I had some wonderful red stripes in my back but the rest of my back was wonderful. Nothing. So that’s sunscreen works is just if you miss a spot it’s going to show right so anyways, I had a pretty bad streak in there on my back. So I was like I can’t go snorkeling and expose my back to the sun. So I had my rash guard so I put it on and it swims if you swim. Wow I can’t talk today. You swim really well with it and it protects you from the sun. So if you had a sunburn your shoulders you know your your upper back, even your chest you know it’s an easy spot to get a sunburn. Just put on a rash guard when you go swimming and then that way you’ll protect your skin even more and you’re not going to make your sunburn worse. So rash guard or a t shirt or like some kind of long sleeve shirt would do the job as well. Now the rest of the tips you know it’s usual stuff as if you would go in the south make sure you drink water because the sun will dehydrate you as well. The heat is very intense. So you want to make sure you keep the hydration those hydration levels super high. Super important. And you know just don’t lay in the sun without some protection. Because you will burn. You will burn our bodies are not made to absorb so much sunlight. I mean a little bit is good but you don’t want to burn yourself because that’s a whole other problem you’re going to have to deal with and if you do have a bad sunburn and make sure you get some aloe vera juice. The best would be in the leaves but I know the leaves in some countries or some hotels they don’t allow you to use it because it does stain the sheets it kind of leaves like a yellowish stain on the sheets. So if you do use it and make sure that you rinse it off before you go to bed so you’re not charged for ruining the sheets, but any type of like burning gel or aloe vera juice would be your best bet to repair the skin.

Once you’re back in your in your country where there’s less sun and less ocean because most of us don’t live in the Caribbean just make sure that you don’t use your retinols and your chemical acids right away because your skin does still fresh from from that weather. So you still have an active tan, even though you protected your skin. And I hope you did for your face. You want to make sure that you’re not putting on right away your prescription retinoids, your retinol, all that jazz is too strong right away. You might irritate your skin especially if you have a little red glow and that comes from that sun exposure. Just make sure you leave a week in between what you can do, you can use enzymes you can use a soft exfoliation if you have a little bit of because you will have some dead skin cell buildup because the sun does increase that cell buildup cycle.

It’s crazy how in the summer our skin just reproduces so faster, so much faster than them in winter. But same idea in the south so you can exfoliate you can use enzymes. Use some repairing mask hydration is really important or use your vitamin C. Vitamin C is great. That’s one active that you can bring with you because they will protect you from oxidative stress from the free radicals that the sun will give you.

So just make sure it’s not a vitamin C that will strip your skin because a lot of vitamin C’s I find are a little bit too harsh for most people and it strips the skin so make sure it’s a formula that works with your skin type. So hopefully this helped you a little bit to prepare if you’re going for a March break or if you’re going on holidays for quick little getaway in the South. Make sure that you bring your good stuff with you in trouble sizes and make sure that you have plenty of sunscreen with you whichever format you prefer to use. Just use it and reapply every two hours. That is the main trick on how to use properly an SPF is to reapply every two hours. If you only put it on in the morning after two hours you’re done. You’re no longer protected unless you’re wearing you know like clothes on your body that will protect you from the race but you want to make sure that you reapply every two hours. It’s not a question of marketing here, it’s a question of science and clinical data on what works. Once you know the difference, you never go back ever again.

Hello everyone. Welcome back to the podcast Emilie here better known as the Meta Fairy and as per usual, the podcast is always brought to you by Meta Esthétique premier Ottawa skincare establishments since 1979, where we guide and educate our clients on how to age gracefully. Now, fun fact, before we get into this, I’m sipping my nice little coffee and I’m looking outside and it’s minus 30.

I actually decided not prep my podcast episodes anymore. Because before I used to record them way in advance and do like batch recording, but I felt like my inspiration was just not there. So now I just kind of speak whatever is on my mind with you know, reasonable  planning, but today, I want to talk about something that I get asked about all the time. We’re going to talk about product formulation and what is the main difference between a professional product and a commercial big store, big pharmacy product?

So a lot of the times when I get a new client and we’ll do we’ll do a dermal imaging session with the Visia will analyze their skin. And we’ll talk about home care because you have to keep in mind that when it comes to changing and transforming your skin, homecare is going to be probably 70% maybe more of how you will transform the skin and what we do in the treatment room. It’s like the extra boost that it’s going to transform the rest of your skin. Some people decide just to do treatments. Some people decide just to do products. But I’ll give you a little analogy so you can kind of understand how products are very important. If you look at someone that goes to the gym, and does a regular workout schedule at the gym, if they go back home and they eat junk food all the time. It’s you know the gym is just going to be like a nice little boost every time they go but they’re not going to see a major skin transformation.

Same thing with homecare especially when we talk about professional home care and again keep in mind you don’t have to have like 15 products at home you can have a very efficient and results oriented routine with only three or four products. So it’s keep keep that in mind. But it’s the same idea when someone will come in for regular treatments, but they use crappy shitty products at home and it’s going to destroy all the improvement that we’ve been doing in the treatment room and don’t get me wrong products will only do so much. Treatments on the other hand, will be like that extra mile that will transform the rest of your skin. So especially when we look into corrective treatments. There’s no product that’s going to shrink your pores, there’s no product that’s going to empty your blackheads, there is no product that’s going to give you a facelift! These are all treatments. These are all things that you have to go see a skincare professional to get done. However, the homecare will keep the results longer and will maintain the result and it will maintain the health of your skin at home. Because the thing is when you do these really nice treatments to your skin if you go back home and you’re using shitty soap on your skin and you know like just basic Cerave moisturizer, which you know, sometimes that’s what you can afford. But again, when it comes to money, you can have really nice professional products that won’t break the bank. Yes, there’ll be a little bit more expensive than the usual stuff you buy at the pharmacy. However you will use much less they will last much longer and they will not irritate and strip your skin.

So it’s important to keep that in mind when you get into professional treatments and things like that. That homecare is a big part of it, even if it’s just a cleanser and a cream. It doesn’t have to be complicated guys. Now, the question in the comments and the things that I see on a day to day is you know what’s the difference with a professional brand that you cannot get in the big box stores that you can only get through a qualified provider.

Between that and a big big product like product line like I don’t know Cerave, La Roche Posey, you know, L’Oreal all that shit in the stores. So these products, there’s three main differences between these products. So first of all quality of ingredients. And I know a lot of people do research on Google and they’re like, it’s all the same thing and it’s like nah buddy, it’s not the same thing. Trust me when I get someone on a regimen even if it’s just one moisturizer in one serum, I can see a huge difference the next month on their skin. A product that you will buy at the pharmacy will not do that.  You will use much more quantity wise because the quality of ingredient is not refined at all. It’s cheaper quality because the way they make their money is on volume sales. So they’re not going to spend and splurge money on top top quality of ingredients that they’re picking to make their formulations because it would cost them way too much. So they want it to cost as little as possible so they can make as much money on the product. They’ll price it cheaper. And then they will sell so much of it because they’re huge brands right? So they focus a lot on volume sales, not on quality. So quality of ingredient is really important.

The second thing that’s going to make a huge difference is the delivery of the ingredients so that comes to the formulation of the product. Very different if you have two products that have very similar ingredient list, they will work totally different on the skin. So what I know about the product of the professional products that we carry, and probably a lot of different professional products on the on the market, his that these formulations have been tested on humans like voluntarily obviously, for years before they would put that product out. When you look at a big commercial brand. You know all these brands that just pop up on Instagram all these little marketing things like oh best moisturizer ever and and an ad cheap today today. They have not been tested. No clinical trials. No testing. No, no, no. There’s no work on the formulation of the ingredients. So another analogy that can help you: when you look at the Olympics when they have the the race thing with the stick, the relay race. So figure that every single ingredient is a person that’s running and the goal of the race is to penetrate where they should go within the skin. Okay. And all the little people that are running and giving the stick to the other person is the formulation of the product and the fastest that they go the more efficient the product is going to penetrate within your skin. Just to give you an idea, that’s kind of how formulation works. So you can have the same ingredients. You won’t have the same quality of ingredients but you could have many different products that say oh there’s hyaluronic acid in it. There’s vitamin C there’s retinol, but the in between ingredients that they use to make sure that these ingredients are carried through your skin to the right spot between your skin layers is going to make a huge difference. So formulation is going to be the thing that’s going to make a huge difference.

Now anytime and every time that I transfer someone over to our professional products, and again, whether it’s a more complex regimen or whether it’s a more simple regimen. Oftentimes we’ll start with a simple one and we’ll build it up with time. The next visit that I see them, which would be four to six weeks after their skin is completely changed. There’s less irritation, there’s less flakiness. There’s you know, the skin just looks a lot healthier. And the most popular comments settle here is oh my god I need so little that is a one very, very popular thing that people realize is that when they use quality products the don’t use a lot of it because it’s made you know it’s high quality stuff guys like and you don’t need a lot it will go and do it on your face. You can use a pea size for your serum, a pea size, maybe not even a chickpea size, like a lentil size for your moisturizer, and it’ll stretch your entire face. So I use a little it’s amazing. So the product therefore will last you a lot longer. Another another one that I’ll hear is “oh my god, I love this stuff!” That’s just a fun one. But a lot of people when they come back, they’re like, oh my god, what was I missing? And the third one would be I can already see a difference on my skin. So that’s why I’m not someone who you know I work in the industry so I see a lot of things I believe in science and I believe in facts and I believe in skin.

There’s a lot of marketing online there’s a lot of marketing marketing hearing there that show Ridiculous. Ridiculous they say ridiculous things on the on their ads, and it’s like no, that’s not possible. One common one that I see all the time is like I’ve seen one with I think it was an eye serum or something like that. And you could see the before pictures which was like exaggerated like the skin was like drooping black, you know, super dark. And then you see the after picture and it’s like, oh my god, there’s no wrinkles left and it’s like the person has a 25 year old eye. I’m sorry but no eye cream will do that. Not even surgery will do that. I mean, depending on the type of surgery that you’d get, but it’s just so sad how gullible people can be when they look through these ads because that’s how ads work online. Right? They they look at your search history. They hear you on your phone, you talk about your concerns, and then boom, you see ads about eye products and face treatments and a lot of them it’s a money trap and it’s just a crappy shitty product. They’re just trying to get your money and it’s not going to do anything on your skin.

That’s another thing that I hear all the time from clients. It’s if someone can’t afford to have a proper regimen, you know is it bad for them to keep doing the pharmacy stuff? And I’m like, well, listen, it’s not necessarily that it’s bad. It’s just I want you to keep your expectations realistic. When coming here Yes, I can give you a nice looking skin but as soon as you go home and you use those cheaper, inexpensive products, do not expect miracles on changing your skin. Because every time I will see you, your skin is gonna be the same in my eyes, my your skin is gonna be the same because I can see I’ve been trained to see and notice and now I’ve done you know 1000s of facial treatments. I can see when someone when someone uses my products and my professional lines, I see a difference in their skin and their skin isn’t maintained and their skin is way healthier every time they come in, versus someone that just comes in for treatments. And it’s okay like it’s not bad or anything. It’s just you just have to be straight and say well you know, if you want to keep using your pharmacy cheaper, inexpensive products, that’s fine. But just keep in mind that I can’t transform your skin the way that I would like to if you’re going to keep that route and sometimes that’s all the client wants. They just want to come in to relax and to have their self care moment and then they go back and they use you know, whatever they can afford and that’s fine. It’s just expectations and goals that we’re trying to do together are going to be way different than someone that’s going to do corrective treatment, someone that’s going to come in every month someone that’s going to do you know everything to keep their skin transformed. and healthy. So it’s not a good or a bad answer is just well just keep in mind, it’s just different. You know, you’re not going to get a huge transformation if you just keep using what you’re using. So we believe in science, we believe in the skin how the skin works, marketing has nothing to do with all of that. It’s really you have to be logical on what a product can do. The product will assess the basic needs of the skin will keep it hydrated will protect the skin will exfoliate the skin but no product will give you a facelift let’s be real. And again, you’ve heard me say this many times. But consistency is what is going to change your skin. If you buy a new skincare regimen with your esthetician stick to it. It takes about three months for the skin to be really really changed. Although you know I can see it right away after four weeks when something changes in the skin when they use our products especially. But you get you need to give yourself time and don’t jump ship Don’t be Don’t get impatient, you know, stick to it and trust me it’ll be the best investment ever that you will do.

I just thought of this but another comment that I’ve heard from clients is because they use so little of the product because they don’t need as much as something that’s inexpensive.

Their jar, their creams are going to last way longer. So they’re like okay, yeah, maybe I’m spending a little bit more on the spot, but it’s lasting me like three times longer than the other stuff. So let’s say they paid 50 bucks for the cheaper pharmacy product and they finish it in a month. Well they’re gonna have to buy three jars of this product to carry them through to three months whereas something that they buy at our place. Minimum a moisturizer will last you three to four to maybe five months. So maybe the moisturizer is going to cost them $150-175 But it will last them for 3, 4 months, maybe even five so sometimes you have to look at it that way. It’s like okay, maybe I’m spending more on the spot. But the cheaper one, you’ll have to buy more to balance out the quantity. So really, you’re spending more money with the cheaper one, right? So sometimes it’s just reversing the whole thing and just thinking about it in a bigger, you know, prospective. The quality one that you’re buying is actually more reasonable in terms of length of time that it will last you than the other one. So that’s something that I heard many, many times from clients.

Let’s take a serum as an example. When you look at a serum that that type of product will be 70 to 100 times more concentrated than a face moisturizer. It’s oftentimes something that’s more liquid. So it’s going to be the first thing you’re going to put on your skin because you want it to penetrate. You want this product to penetrate first because it will go the deepest. Now if you look at a big brand product, such as a serum, a lot of the times the active ingredients are surrounded with a lot of water and alcohol. So there’s a lot of waste in the ingredients that they put in because they want to fill up their bottles, right so they’re going to use inexpensive, low quality, cheaper buffer ingredients in there in order to fill up their bottle so it’s not concentrated at all. And most of the time, they won’t do much on the skin. If not they will not do much or they will irritate your skin because it’s just not the right product for you. The number of times that I’ve seen clients bring their regimen to me and they use you know, retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, like they just use so much because they’re bombarded with the idea that Retinol is the best ingredient vitamin C you should use everyday and yes some of that is true, but you have to keep in mind that our skin types are all different. And if someone has rosacea and is super sensitive, they can’t use retinol most of the time they can’t they have to use other ingredients to make sure that their skin is radiant and beautiful. But skin type is huge. That is a major other difference when you go and buy a regimen versus going to Sephora versus going to someplace like ours that we are a trained quality. We’re trained as estheticians to tell you what your skin needs. When you go to big stores. They’re not estheticians most of the time and they’re just they’re there to fill up a sales quota. Okay, so that’s just how it is. So again, inexpensive, big brand products will have a lot of buffer ingredients, a lot of low quality not concentrated things in their formulation. So that’s why a lot of the times it just sits at the top of your skin doesn’t penetrate at all. So that’s the major difference between that’s another major difference between a quality product versus a cheap, big store product.

And I’m just gonna slip this in towards the end of the podcast. But wouldn’t you rather encourage a small business in your community with their very nice quality ingredients product that will change your skin instead of going to Sephora? Like really? I mean today, especially today, we are surrounded with Amazon. We’re surrounded with these big, big corporations that are eating away the small businesses and by the way, there’s no economy of there’s no small businesses, okay? So if you have 200, 300, $400 to splurge on yourself and you want to get into skincare, please go to your local esthetician that you trust, obviously ask for referrals, you know, check reviews and stuff like that, but go to a quality place guys, your skin and your self care. And that can give you the results that you’re looking for.

But honestly I think the message here is please go encourage a small business, a small medium business that is around you and that can give you the results that you’re looking for. If this is what you’re looking for, but yeah, just screws Sephora and all these big stores, they have a lot of money they don’t care about your sale. When you go to a small business like ours, we actually jump every time we make a transaction like in our in our head but it’s just so important to support small businesses. So just think about where you put your money guys, and just make sure that you understand that it does make a difference to a business when you go to a small business like ours. Hello everyone welcome back to the podcast Emilie here as usual better known as the Meta Fairy, and today is going to be a quick but efficient podcast episode to make sure that you are someone that is aware of the side effects of getting fat removal procedures.

So this is a question that I get asked so much. So I thought I would do a quick podcast episode to let you know that you should be aware of certain side effects before you get into permanent fat removal procedures. I’m not saying they’re good I’m not saying they’re bad. I just want you to be aware of what is going to happen to your skin as you get older if you get these permanent fat removal procedures.

So fat dissolving treatments you probably know there’s one very popular it’s called CoolSculpting. They use real really cold technology in order to kind of destroy the fat cells. Most people do it on their stomach, their bums, some on their arms, you know where all the fat cells kind of go as you tend to get a little bit older. You can also do Deoxycholic acid injection so the brand name would be chi Bella. These are non invasive cosmetic procedures but they will target the fat cells and they will pretty much liquefy them and they will break them down and they will be flushed out of the body by the lymphatic system. So, in short, they really target the fat areas that you’re concerned with most people when they look into these procedures, they are probably in their 20s or in the 30s you know they’re relatively young and there’s a thing you have to keep in mind as you get older the skin so the top layer what you see with your eyes is going to lose electricity is going to lose density it’s going to lose firmness.

Okay. So when you get these fat removal, permanent fat removal procedures, unfortunately you’re removing that fat pad where the skin lays on top.

So think about it this way. You know when you make your bed in the morning and imagine your mattress as your fat pad nice and firm when you’re young everything’s there, and your sheets is your skin. So you’ve got your three layers of the skin. This is your skin right? Remove your mattress and look at how your sheets are hanging. So this is not an issue when you’re young. When you’re young. You’re in your 20s and your 30s maybe at the limit in your 40s Depending on your genetics and how you take care of your skin. It doesn’t show it’ll be fine. But as you get in your 50s and your 60s and older, the skin starts to crinkle and it starts to lose density and it starts to fall. So unless you’re getting a permanent fat removal procedure, mixed with surgery to tighten the skin as you get you know you do it together. And again when you’re young it’s not an issue. It’s more when you get older that you’re gonna be like oh my god my skin cannot lay on anything so it’s it’s dropping down like a crinkled sheet. So keep that in mind when you do permanent fat removal procedures. Again, I’m not saying they’re bad. I’m not saying they’re good. I just want you to be conscious about what it’s going to do to your skin.

It’s like same idea when I have when I have ladies that come in when they would come in in the past when we did hair removal, permanent hair removal on their resilience, I would tell them Are you sure? Are you sure you want me to remove every single hair in there? And then they were like well and they’re kind of like debating if they should and I’m like listen, keep a strip because as you get older, your vulva is not going to look pretty okay. It’s inevitable. As we get older, the skin crinkles up, it sags. That’s just how we age. Okay, so it might not be before you hit 60 but it will happen. So if you don’t have anything to hide that a little strip, a little landing strip, you’re going to be super concerned about looking at your Volva.

So this is kind of like it’s kind of the same idea when I have people asking me about oh my god I have a double chin when they really don’t, or when they have a little stomach area that’s bothering them. Obviously it’s different depending on the age to the genetics and how you’re, you know, depending how you’re made physically, but generally speaking, it’s the same process for the skin.

If you remove the fat pads, and it’s the thing is to there’s a lot of trends happening online. There’s a lot of popular things people are doing their lips people are doing, you know CoolSculpting people are doing this, this this and that. Listen biology is biology don’t go according to trends. We’re all made differently but but the skin will be the skin on everybody. It’s the same process as it ages. It will lose density, it will lose smoothness, it will lose firmness, it’s going to get thinner, it’s gonna get fragile. And if you remove completely the fat patch unless you do you know a surgery that will tighten the skin and I’m not talking about skin tightening because there’s only so much skin tightening can do especially if you’re if you’re in your 50s and 60s.
I’m talking about you know, actually going snip snip and doing a tuck with your skin while you’re doing permanent fat removal like liposuction or something like that. Just keep in mind that the skin is not going to have anything to hang on to so it’s going to look a lot worse as you get older.

Obviously there are certain cases that it’s a little different but I just wanted you to be aware because most people will not spend the money to do surgery and do a Nip Tuck if they’re doing fat removal, permanent fat removal procedures. Okay, so just keep that in mind. Another example would be lip fillers.

So funny, funny background stories. I’ve I’ve been in the aesthetic field since I was like probably 15-16. So I’ve always worked with older esthetician, so obviously my mom was you know, she was the owner, but the staff was always the same around the same age as my mom. So all the estheticians that worked with us were probably a good 20 years older than me. And they had gone through all of these things because when you’re in the aesthetic field, you’re exposed to all these things, injections, treatments, products, you know, everything. So the girls that would work with us had done all these things, and I would always be worn to be like hey, think about this because when you get older this happens think about this because when you get older your skin does this.

So a lot of people today they do procedures when they’re in their 20s or early 30s But they don’t think about what it’s going to look like how like when their skin ages. So coming back to lip fillers. lip fillers are great but unfortunately it’s such a bad trend right now because it’s cuz it you know it’s cosmetic procedures. It’s not something to take lightly. It does change the morphology or however you say it It changes the way your lips are. Because when you think about it, a filler will make a hole right inside of your wherever the area that you’re injecting and we deposit yellow headache fillers, which will retain more water, which will give you the plump look. So people that do these big lips and these big cheeks. Eventually if they stop, they’re going to have a gap in between their skin layers, right depending how the injection is done. It can be done on the muscle or in between the skin layers. I’m not an objector. So I can’t tell you the exact the exact terms but depends there’s a few ways you can do injections however it does stretch out the skin. We have seen in the past people that are unfortunately obsessed with getting fillers, and their skin is so puffy that they’re getting broken capillaries and you know they can’t even open their eyes because they’re so stuffed up with fillers. And you know, it is what it is. It’s your body. It’s your choice. I’m not against injectables. I think you can do a lot of great things with injectables. But just be aware when you’re young and you’re doing all these procedures. Your skin will change and thin out as you get older.

So that gap that you’re getting done in your lips when you do lip fillers may look great when you’re 25 But when you get to 35,40, 45,50 … you’re going to be left with if you stop, you’re going to be left with that gap and as you get older you’re going to need to put more in usually that’s kind of how it goes. Because the skin thins out and the skin needs more. So unless you you never stopped doing fillers, it’s gonna look great, but there may come at a point in your life that you’re gonna have to stop doing fillers because of XYZ. And unfortunately that gap will be left there and I’ve seen that on a lot of older clients that I treat. A lot of them have been through the fillers route, which was great. Obviously it looks amazing. But as soon as they stop, they’re like, Oh my God, my skin has this gap and that it’s been stretched out right? Even though it’s the smallest amount it’s been stretched out. So you know I have to work with this because I stopped doing them. So I need to work on the quality of my skin because I’ve got this space and stretched out situation. So, again, I think injectables are great. I think you can do wonderful things with injectables. But just be aware that as you get older your skin will change and it will not look the same as you get older.

So that’s all I wanted to say today. I just want you to be more aware of these more permanent treatments that are available in the market. Some of them are awesome. Some of them you know they’re just trends and they’re not going to last. And others you just have to make sure that you understand how it’s going to affect your skin as you get older and some and that’s just it. There’s I’m not saying they’re good. I’m not saying they’re bad. I just want you to be more aware of what’s going to happen as you get older and a lot of providers do not tell you these things. The number of people that I’ve seen that when they say Oh, I had a consultation for this, this and that. And then I tell them all these things just to be aware of it, not to discourage them, but just to make sure that they’re they know what’s going to happen to their skin as they get older. It’s just because what I do, I like to give them the entire picture so that they make a good decision for themselves. And that’s only because I’ve worked with so many older providers, older institutions, not that it’s in that’s great because it gives me like I know, I know the secrets of what happens when you get older. So it’s important to think about that. So this to say I like to give someone the entire picture of what’s going to happen so that they can make a good decision for themselves.

So hopefully that gave you a little bit more awareness about permanent fat removal procedures and injectables. They are not bad. They’re not good. You just have to be aware of what of what’s going to happen to your skin as you get these procedures and as you get older because Yep, it’s a reality of things. That you’ve got to keep in mind.

Hello everyone, welcome back to the podcast and this is going to be a short edition to help you understand your skin a little better and today we’re talking about the difference between dry and dehydrated skin and there’s a major difference between the two. This is a common thing that I hear on a day to day basis. My skin so dry my skin so dehydrated my skin so dry and or dehydrated. And sometimes there’s a little confusion between the two and trust me they’re very, very different.

So the major different difference is going to be that dryness is actually more of a skin type so dry skins, whereas dehydration is more of a skin condition. Fact your skin does need a balance of oil and water. That’s why when it’s comfortably balanced, that’s when you have a smooth glowing, beautiful skin. However, you know, we don’t live in a perfect world you know, the perfect skin does not exist. So it’s important to always not fight but go for a nice balanced, hydrated skin.

Now, you cannot have a skin that is oily and dry at the same time because a dry skin type means that you’re not producing enough oil. So these two would contradict each other when you have dry skin. You don’t produce enough oils and the oil like your your your moisture barrier is made up of lipids so oils and its job is to keep the moisture within the skin so when you have dry skin types, you’re not producing enough oils and that’s why you tend to be more dehydrated. It can happen to be dry and dehydrated because the dry skin is promoting the loss of moisture. So for someone that has a dry skin, you’re going to have very little pores because your skin is not producing enough oils, you’re falling cules follicles they don’t have a chance to dilate and stretch out the pores because there’s minimal oil production. So if you look at your skin, and you have very little pores, no breakouts, your skin, your skin consistently feels tight. It may appear rough flaky, your barrier is compromised because obviously you have less oil your moisture is coming out so there’s a little bit more sensitivity to the skin. That means you have a dry skin type dry skin types is something that you’re born with. So it’s just that’s kind of how you can differentiate the both dry skins you’re born with and it’s just something that’s genetic.

Now when it comes to dehydration, that’s loss of moisture. So again, you can be a dry skin type and be dehydrated at the same time but you can’t be an oily skin type and be dry at the same time. Because it doesn’t make any sense because we’re talking about oil production here. But you can be dry and be dehydrated at the same time. So it’s important that you tackle both if you have a dry skin type. You want to make sure that you’re replenishing that oil that you actually need to rebuild that moisture barrier so that you can keep more moisture within the skin. So it’s important to think about both.

Now dehydration, on the other hand, usually is going to be associated with environmental factors. So it’s not something that you’re born with it’s something that happens because of other things. Now for someone that has dehydrated skin condition, the skin is going to feel tight, and that’s because there’s a lack of water in the surface fills Okay, so unlike dry skin, which is a consistent condition, it’s a consistent skin type, dehydrated skin, it’s not going to always be there it can come and go now depending on what you do at home and your day to day lifestyle habits that will influence the water levels in your skin.

And let’s talk about one myth here, drinking water is not going to necessarily be the fastest way to hydrate your skin because it has to go it has to go through your entire system before it can hit your your skin which is you know the protective barrier of your body so it’s going to go there last so the quickest way and more most efficient way that you can hydrate your skin is going to be with topical products. It’s going to be the fastest way that you can tackle that issue.

So recap: dry Skin is a can is a skin type even for me sometimes it’s confusing. So dry skin is a skin type. It means that you’re not producing enough oils, so you can’t retain the water in your skin very well and that will affect your moisture barrier which is made up of oils. So dehydration is a skin condition and it’s not going to be there all the time. It’s going to come and go throughout your life depending on what you do to your skin to keep the moisture within your skin.

So once the skin type the other one is a skin condition. Very very clear!

So hopefully that helps you to understand a little bit more about what dry skin is and what dehydration is. There’s a few things you can do to help these two skin issues. We can go through this in another podcast episode today. I really wanted you to know the difference between what a dry skin type is and what a dehydrated skin condition is. The source is very different. So that’s why you will have different types of solutions for both of them because the source isn’t the same. It’s the same thing as if you’re treating someone that has rosacea. Versus someone that has acne. The source of the problem is a difference. So you have to tackle it in a different way for each it’s not like a one size fits all thing. When you’re dry your lot you don’t have enough oils and when you’re dehydrated you don’t have enough water so you need to give it water the other one you need to give more oils. So it’s easy to confuse them because sometimes they look the same but the key difference is going to be when you have dry skin. You have very little pores you have very little secretions. You don’t have a lot of blackheads. You don’t have a lot of acne. It’s it’s that’s one of the key things that you’re going to notice on someone that’s dry if you look at their skin or if you look at your skin and you’re like I don’t know if I’m dry or dehydrated. Look at your sebum activity and look at your pore size that will tell you right away if you’re dry, or if you’re dehydrated. So hopefully that helped you guys understand a little bit more about how you can differentiate dehydration with and or dryness.

Also knows as the acid mantle, did you know that your moisture barrier is your skin’s BODY GUARD? This famous barrier is not only responsible to protect the skin from environmental debris and outside bacteria, but it also has another purpose: to keep the moisture within your skin. It’s made up of lipids (oils) that bind your skin cells together. When it’s intact, the skin feels soft and supple. But when it’s broken or damaged, it will make your skin feel irritated, red, sensitive, since it has tiny broken cracks that is letting the moisture OUT and letting the outside irritants IN. Now we are still in the wintertime and I don’t know for you but whenever the cold weather is around us I can definitely feel it in my skin. And it is the same for every one. I don’t believe that someone’s skin can stay relatively the same throughout 12 months out of the year, the winter time. Even if your winter time is slightly warmer than a typical Canadian winter. You will still have a slight change in humidity in you know all the way the sun hits the earth and the way you know you change your lifestyle according to seasons like there’s so many different things that will affect your skin but environmental change and environmental seasons will definitely have an effect on it.

So today I thought I would talk about something that we kind of tend to forget about. And it is going to be the base of four different skin conditions when this happens, so we’re going to talk about four different skin conditions that are linked to a broken moisture barrier.

Okay, so first and foremost, let’s talk about the moisture barrier and what it is. The moisture barrier is also known as the acid mantle and it is your skin’s bodyguard. So this famous barrier is not only responsible to protect the your skin from the invite environmental debris outside bacteria, but it’s also really important to keep in mind that the moisture barrier. One of its main roles is to keep the moisture within your skin. So it’s made up of lipids so oils and they bind your skin cells together. And when it’s really really healthy, the skin is going to feel soft and supple. But when it’s broken or damaged, it’s going to feel irritated, red is sensitive and that’s only because there are tiny, tiny little broken cracks in that barrier and it’s letting the moisture out and it’s letting the outside irritants in. So we always have to keep in mind that the health of your moisture barrier is going to be influenced by two different things, especially two different things so you’ll have your day to day habits. But you’ll also have the things that you put on the skin as well.

So what does it look like and feel like? Usually, especially for me because I treat a lot of skins. Usually I can tell right away when someone’s moisture barrier is broken as soon as I touch them. First of all the touch is really really rough. Some people will get more flakiness than others it depends on the degree of how damaged the moisture barrier is. Redness right away. dryness, irritation, sensitivity and most of the time these are things that you can fix if it’s solely linked to a broken moisture barrier.

Now there are many different habits that will influence the health of your moisture barrier and a lot of them if they’re little things, little things that will accumulate throughout time and will really damage consistently that barrier. So for example over exfoliation is one of like the most common one that you’ll see that and using skincare products that are too drying so someone that uses a high foaming cleanser or a soap bar every morning and night. There moisture barrier is going to be totally screwed up. And it’s silly but just the first step of the regimen, the cleansing step when that is not the right product for your skin type. It really throws off the rest of your regimen because it’s giving your skin a condition that it should not have normally because it is due to the high drying level of that cleanser. Another thing would be skipping the use of your moisturizer so you know sometimes when you know it’s your lazy Sunday afternoons or lazy Sunday mornings, and you basically don’t do anything all day long or you’re just too busy, maybe kids or family duties that you just completely forget to put on something on your skin. Doing that consistently. You will feel it right away that your skin is dry. Your skin needs that moisture on a day to day basis. And when you skip it way too many times. It’s going to try to bounce back and protect itself. So some people for example, the ones that have oily skins, they think that if they use a moisturizer, it’s going to increase the oils. It won’t it actually will diminish your oil production because when you don’t wear moisturizer, your oily skin is going to be like oh my God, I need water. I need it. I need it. So it’s going to overproduce oil to try to bounce back. The fact that there’s less moisture within the skin. So just keep that in mind. Don’t skip the use of your moisturizer. Use it morning and night. Super important.

Another common one that I’ll see is prescription retinoids those damn prescription retinoids Listen, I have a love and hate relationships with the prescription retinoids the only reason behind that is because so many people that I see that use prescription retinoids their skin is completely screwed up. It is too strong. It makes the skin really flaky. It basically really destroys the moisture barrier because it is a strong prescription. So unless you have really bad scarring or really bad wrinkles that are deep, deep, deep, deep, I don’t really necessarily believe that you need a prescription strength retinoids you can get one that is a little lower than a pure vitamin A prescription and you will get the same results except you will not have as much irritation. So that’s another common one that I see.

And obviously in the winter, the fact that we’re going to artificial warming systems so most of us have furnaces or you know heating systems in our house. That’s super drying on the skin and most of us need a humidifier or something to retain the moisture in the air. And then you go out and super cold so there’s a clash in the climates. You know, it’s very, very harsh on the skin. So you know these are just little things that over time if you keep doing them you will encourage a more broken moisture barrier.

When you have a broken moisture barrier, it is it’s going to encourage lots of skin concerns that you wouldn’t normally have. So yeah, some people tend to be more sensitive to be more sensitive Naturally Speaking, others tend to be more dehydrated naturally. But here we’re talking about skin conditions that are induced by moisture barriers that are damaged. And most of the time what’s going to happen is that the common signs of a damage moisture barrier will be lots of dryness, so you know when it’s like you touch with your fingers, your skin and it feels really rough to the touch. That can be one because you’re you’re drawing flakiness and peeling. That’s going to be another one irritation and redness. So inflammation is going to be your big number one. And for some people this is the sucky part is that if you have a broken moisture barrier, that that means it’s let it’s letting the moisture out. Right. So when it’s letting the moisture out, your skin is going to be naturally dehydrated. And then it’s going to block the sebum activity from coming out to your skin and people that are more acne prone are going to have more breakouts because everything is clogged underneath the skin because of that dry buildup.

Basically you’re going back to basics. When your moisture barrier is not healthy when it’s broken. You really need to go back to the basics and you have to think moisture, moisture, moisture repair and calming ingredients. Keep in mind as you get older, your your skin’s moisture barrier like anything else in your skin, you know the activity slows down the skin becomes a little bit more sensitive and then it becomes more dry because you’re producing less oil, things like that your skin’s moisture barrier is going to be more vulnerable after a certain age. So for sure, aging is going to be a factor to keep in mind but there’s always things there’s always things that you can do to keep it as healthy as possible.

So one thing that you will do, like I said before, you’re going to go back to basics. You’re going to put away your retinoids you’re going to put away your vitamin C’s you’re going to put away your AHAs your BHAs anything that’s really strong and active. You’re going to put all that shit aside, okay? Because your skin’s simply not going to take it. It’s not normal to put on something on your skin and to feel it sting. Every time you put something on your skin. That’s your skin kind of trying to tell you that something’s not right.

Okay, so first of all, you’re going to use a very gentle cleanser. So you’re going to put away any type of foaming cleanser, put that shit aside, and you’re going to be using such a calming milky something that’s not going to irritate your skin and something that’s not going to form Okay, so some type of emulsion or some type of milk usually is the best way to go because it’s it really leaves the skin nice and hydrated. You’re going to watch out for your toners you’re going to make sure that they’re not astringent, you’re going to make sure that there’s no alcohol in them. And you’re going to make sure that you’re going to switch that out for more of like an essence.

So instead of using a toner, you’re going to use a essence and the one I really do recommend to use is the Intuos line. There’s a product called the boosting essence, it’s kind of like an ALEC sear. And what it’s going to do is that it’s really going to repair that skin it’s going to get it ready to absorb the future products that you can put on your skin. It’s going to detoxify the skin too at the same time. So and it’s going to feed it a lot of nutrients and a lot of vitamins at the same time. So very important to just keep it basic but use products that won’t be too aggressive on the skin. Okay.

Now another thing habit wise that you’re going to try to stop doing is washing your face with really really really really hot water. So you know when you go in the shower and you’re taking the super hot shower because you really feel like it. Well you’re not going to put your head under the stream of water that is too hot. Because when you do that the hot water it’s going to dilate your capillaries okay, it’s going to raise your skin’s internal temperature and it will impair the skin’s moisture barrier your best to use lukewarm or even cold water because that will not aggress the skin’s moisture barrier. Super important. Some people love the hot water on the face. It’s great but you can’t do it consistently. You really have to avoid it, especially if your skin is in a situation where the moisture barrier is not is not in its optimal situation health wise.

Now in terms of moisturizer, you’re going to use one simple moisturizer morning and night. Keep it simple guys, it’s the same idea. You’re going to back to you’re going to go back to simple routines. You want a moisturizer that is made to fix. redness, irritation, dehydration, you know the typical moisturizer that is going to calm the skin down. That is going to rehydrate it and rebalance everything that’s going on with that moisture barrier. So the one that I truly, truly, really really love is this Swiss fine Aqua coulomb creme. Anyone that has used this moisturizer before I call it the gold jar. Even though the jar is pink, it’s like it’s gold in a jar. It is so so soothing. It even has a green tint in it to kind of counter effect the redness of the skin. And it really really works well on flushing that redness. You can also use a specific serum or something that’s a little bit more concentrated but again, not something that’s too active something that’s going to target that specific irritation. The peace booster is a really good example and swissline That one is made for irritated, flaky, any skin type that tends to be more in the irritation side is really really great for that and wear your sunscreen and then you’re golden. So you’re going back to basics. You’re using a very basic routine. You can even drop down to simply using a cleanser and a moisturizer and obviously your SPF in the day but if you really want to drop it down, but generally speaking, it won’t be an overnight thing. You need to keep doing this for a long time. Up to four weeks, I would say a good month before you actually start to see that, hey, my skin is actually starting to feel less irritated, less sensitive, less angry, basically. So I would say four weeks is going to be the timeline that you’re going to look at in terms of fixing that whole damage, moisture barrier. And keep in mind it’s something that can come back if you go back to old habits if you go back to doing the things that did in in store can you say that that in store that brought up the broken moisture barrier. If you go back to all these things that you were doing, then it will naturally come back.

So don’t think that once you’re done fixing your moisture barrier then you’re done for life. It’s it’s kind of like staying in shape. You always have to work at it to make sure that you stay in shape, right. So keep that in mind when you go back to like using your exfoliation acids and your vitamin C’s and all these things. Just keep in mind Don’t go too fast, you know, slowly at a time reintroduce your things slowly don’t shock your skin into too much activity because it will scare it off and you might have some issues with your moisture barrier that will come back. So hopefully that gave you a few insights on the things that you can do to really help the health of your moisture barrier. The really the ultimate trick is really to always have something in your routine that’s going to be hydrating hydration is one of the most important skin concerns that you should keep in mind. So hydration goes hand in hand with a healthy moisture barrier. In terms of professional treatments, we can do a lot when it comes to moisture barrier.

But ultimately speaking, it really comes to what you do at home that’s going to be a game changer. You can come and see us every month. But if you go back at your house and you do shitty skincare habits, we’re gonna have to fix you up every single time that you come in and it’s not going to last because you’re not doing the right things at home. So keep that in mind. When it comes to a broken moisture barrier. It really comes to what you do at home and using the right type of products in order to fix your skin.

Hello everyone welcome back to the podcast Emilie here as usual better known as the metal fairy and today we are talking about four things in the winter that can happen and the way that you can solve them. So these are four things that I hear about all the time and I’m I’m inspired today to talk about this because it is currently with the wind factor. I think it’s about minus 42 degrees Celsius today. So this inspired me to just do a little impromptu podcast, just to talk about annoying winter skin issues that we all go through that I hear about all the time that I thought it would be, you know something very interesting for you to listen to. So you can have some solutions to common skincare problems in the winter. So the first one is going to be chaplets. So we all know that in the winter with the freezing temperature the dry air the gusty winds. We all experienced chaplets I think it’s a very common one. But the thing that I’ve noticed is that not a lot of people are using a treatment lip cream at night to repair the skin. So you’ve heard me talk about this before but the skin is really into repair mode at night. So during the day you want to make sure you protect and you hydrate and you nourish your skin. You just want to make sure it’s protected right and you’re keeping that moisture in the skin and you’re wearing your SPF but in the nighttime your your moisture barrier needs some repairing actions, some treatment in order to be more efficient in the daytime so it doesn’t really act the same at the nighttime versus the daytime. Some of you may experience this a lot during the day you’re going to be a little bit more oily in the skin.
And that’s totally normal is because your moisture barrier is in kind of like an overdrive status because it’s trying to protect itself against the environment. So it’s going to produce more oils in order to make sure that it’s really protected. Versus the nighttime you won’t wake up with a face full of oil. It just doesn’t work that way. So that’s why it just doesn’t work the same am and pm you just have to find the little tricks in order to treat your skin at night so it can be repaired and it can be more protective. During the day. So dry, chapped lips.
Lips are a little different than the rest of our skin because they don’t really produce oil. It’s like an area that just doesn’t really have a lot of sebaceous activity. So you have to find a way to keep them hydrated in the cold dry hair. And sometimes that’s really really hard because we you know we tend to go for lip bones but if you look at the ingredient list on common lip balms that you’ll find in in the stores, most of them have petroleum which is not really great for the skin. So you want to make sure you’ve got something that will treat the skin. So what I would do would be a couple of times a week I will use a gentle lip scrub just to remove the dead flaky skin that’s just built on top with time remember when you nourish or hydrate your skin, there’s no point to do that on dead dry skin cells. You want to do that on the new ones that come to the surface right? So remove the superficial dryness and then you want to use a treatment lip cream. The one that we recommend is the lip zone complex and swissline. I tell you, you need the smallest amount. The smallest amount like the clients that use it cannot believe how the smallest amount will go so far around all the lips around on that area. So it is you just need to find the right product to treat your skin and don’t forget to protect your lips with SPF. There’s a lot of people that go out in the wintertime and they go you know skiing they go do winter activities and they get burned on the lips because they don’t put any SPF on the lips so make sure when you put on your powder or your sunscreen, protect your lips at the same time super, super, super important. So I’m going to put a link below so you guys can check out the lip product that I mentioned a for for your dry lips. Honestly I leave it on my bedtime table. I use it every night I never forget and on my lips honestly during the winter are never Chappie ever and I don’t even use lip balm it during the day. So do that and that will fix your lip issues. Now the second one and this is something that happens to me in the winter is having cracked heels. So the feet unfortunately they just get worse and worse as with as winter drags on, and it’s super annoying because you look at your feet and you’re like Oh my God. They look disgusting and crank cracky so you want to stay on top of it and you want to prevent the cracking before it comes so the solution is that you need to find like a thick ointment, something that’s going to be really really heavy that you’re going to put on your feet and that you’re going to sleep with socks that will prevent the moisture from escaping, and it’s really going to help force the ointment to soak into the feet. The one that I recommend is in given give all has a really nice and thick bone for Cracked feet. It is the thickest thing I’ve ever played with in terms of cream, but you put that all over your feet you put your socks on and you go to bed with them. And the next day if you do that consistently for a week, your feet will never crack in the winter. So if you’re someone that already does that, I would just keep doing it on a consistent basis during the winter. Not necessarily every night if you’re on top of it, but I think it would be it would be very it’s a preventive trick in order to prevent the crack Enos to come with your skin on your feet. So if you’re already on top of it, you can do it a couple times a week, maybe three times a week. If you’re already cracked and you want to fix it ASAP. Do it for a week straight and you will see it will completely remove the cracked skin. Now number three is a so it’s a very common one is the dry peeling nose. So when you think about it, the nose is exposed to everything environmental, like environmental wise. The winter air hits your nose, it’s the first thing it’s going to hit because it kind of pulls out of your face right? And it it’s really going to dry out the the membrane around the nose and sometimes the little cracks where you usually get super dry. It’s it’s hard for the skin to retain the moisture because of that environmental exposure because of the UV damage. It’s just one of those spots that is oftentimes really pili and very flaky for a lot of people. So first and foremost, you want to make sure that you’re not using something that’s too dry on your skin obviously that’s going to be the first thing that you’re going to look at but if normally speaking you’re fine in the winter and summer and in the winter you’re like oh my god my knows what’s going on. You want to make sure that you’re properly applying your products. So you know when you’re in a rush, and you’re just like slapping on your creams and your serums but the cracks around your nose. Do you actually take time to apply the products in the cracks of your nose? Probably not. So for the next month, I’m gonna give you a challenge. Every time you put your creams on your serums in the morning and at night. Make sure that you focus on the cracks of your nose. Okay, take some take your cream, and even before putting it on over your entire face, put it on your nose and in the cracks and Curt like do like do a moment of it to make sure I’m actually doing it right now while I’m speaking in the mic but make sure that you’re actually pushing in your products into the cracks of your nose. Trust me you’re gonna see a difference because you’re probably you’re probably not taking the time to apply it in the nooks and crannies of your face. And that’s probably why you have a dry peeling nose. Okay, if once you do that and you’re still peeling make sure that you have a regular exfoliating technique. And again, when you exfoliate your face do you actually take the time to go in those cracks of the nose to remove the flakiness of the dye. The dry dead skin cell build up. So I think when it comes to the nose if your products are all good if you have the right skincare regimen if you if that’s all good if you’re drinking a lot of water if you’re doing all the things take the time to apply your creams and serums on the cracks of your nose. I swear you will see a difference because you’re probably not paying attention to it. And that’s why it’s already it’s always flaky in the wintertime. I think one of the things that I noticed is that you know we’re all busy. We’re always busy. We’re always doing things fast. We want the quickest way to put on our creams because we don’t take the time. But when you think about it if you wash your face half ass if you don’t take the time to cleanse and tone if you don’t take the time to exfoliate, couple times a week. It’s all little things that eventually will show up on your skin and you’ll have little skin concerns that you’re like why is it this way? Well take the time to put on your cream on the cracks of your nose. It’s that simple. I see it as your cuticles on your nails. So you know you have those beautiful dip nails beautiful and everything but your cuticles are dry. What I do and again it’s kind of like the nose idea. I actually take the time every night to put on a specific treatment cuticle cream on my cuticles while I watch our little shows at night before we go to bed. I put it on my cuticles and I tell you my cuticles are not as dry as they usually are because I do wash my hands like 20 million times a day. So they tend to get dry and that’s normal because I’ve watched him so much. But I take the time to apply the cuticle treatment cream on every single cuticle and I just make a moment out of it. So it’s the same idea with your nose. It’s just pay attention to it and apply your stuff on the nose. Now, if you want another tip on top of that, you could use something that’s a little bit thicker, just for your nose. I know that’s a little bit like okay, Emily, are you gonna have like a precise nose cream? No, probably not. But if you have it brings me to my my fourth trick if you have flaky skin in the winter, adding a night cream that is a lot thicker and more nourishing to your skin would be a nice trick to treat your skin at night.
But you could use that cream a little bit more thick around your cracks the cracks of your nose. Okay. So like I said cracky flaky skin in on the face in the wintertime is so so common. So every time that happens, you know you want to make sure that it’s it’s it’s the moisture barrier right so you want to make sure that you’re using products at home that are going to always always nourish and repair the moisture barrier. So the thing that happens is that it’s it can be challenging during the winter because cold temperatures and low humidity will cause the dry air to put water out of your skin. So, you know it’s it’s that every day consistently every day will damage your barrier and it’s going to cause tiny little invisible cracks in the skin and then the moisture escapes through these cracks and it makes you even harder. It makes it harder for you to edit for your skin to retain the moisture. So it’s kind of like a little vicious circle. So you always have to work against it. You have to be preventive about it. So I think for me, in the nighttime, I make sure to either add a thicker nourishing cream that will treat the moisture barrier at night for my clients or I will add a serum at night to make sure that we’re treating precisely the moisture barrier. So one of the two products that I love to recommend you’ve got the peace booster which has nicely to mide and tranexamic acid in it. So that precise booster works a lot on redness, unevenness and it will tackle the moisture barriers health. So that’s a really cool product to add to any of your skincare regimen because it goes with any product line that you’re using. But its precise role is really to tackle the moisture barrier. And when you think about it, a lot of skin issues happen because your moisture barrier is not healthy. So that little hero tool is really really handy to use. That’s something that I recommend to a lot of people because I see it right away the skin is just that has that like redness, underlying and flakiness, peace booster boom in three weeks, you’re gonna see a huge difference.
Another thing that I like to do again is to switch out their routine and to make sure that they have a night treatment that they can use I love to recommend the apple comm in full detail swissline It is such a thick, do we cream that’s going to repair the softness of your of your face. It’s going to repair also your skin and die down the inflammation levels. So you may think me personally I don’t have sensitive skin however, I feel that as I get a little older every year I feel like you know I can’t get away with using like the lightest moisturizer that just doesn’t work for me anymore. My skin needs more treatment and more heaviness. So in the nighttime I actually use the Aqua comb to make sure that I’m on top of the inflammation levels to make sure that my skin stays stays soft. Do we hydrated and protected. So and you see a difference with that cream like it’s it’s it’s such a cool cream they actually trial that cream on people that had I think they were so they were stung by bees. It was like an experiment that they did and they used the prototype of that cream to see how it would calm inflammation and repair the skin after that. injury. And it works like a charm. So it’s a really really cool cream to have in the wintertime especially if you’re concerned with Hey, my skin’s flaky, it’s dry and because my skin is flaky and dry, it’s more red and inflamed. Well the Aqua calm is a perfect solution for you. So the last thing that I could say would be if you’re doing everything every everything, maybe add a serum or add a specific nighttime treatment, whether it’s moisturizer or serum to tackle the the moisture barriers health. We tend to forget about the moisture barrier we tend to be obsessed with like oh wrinkles and pigmentation and you know, all these little skin concerns. But if the moisture barrier is not healthy at the base, your skin’s not going to take in all the other treatments that you’re trying to give it it’s gonna say hey, the moisture barrier right here is it’s not healthy. So I don’t care about the college and I don’t care about the turbos and ACE inhibitors. I don’t care about retinol. You’re drying me out I need moisture barrier one on one cocooning. So that’s why I always like to have at least one ingredient or one product and my clients regimen that will always make sure that we’re tackling hydration and that we’re protecting the moisture barrier is super, super important. Now I’m not going to talk about moisture barrier for the whole the whole episode because that’s an episode on its own. There’s a lot of things that do influence the health of your moisture barrier. So I might talk about this the next time because it is winter and it’s probably a good idea to do a little refresh on how important it is to protect your moisture barrier. So I hope this inspired you to protect your skin in the winter time to go back to soothing ingredients to make sure that you you know apply your creams in the nooks and crannies of your face because sometimes we just we go too fast and we just don’t and that’s why you’re pili that’s why you’re flaky. January is such a long winter month: post holidays, catching up after our time off, kids going back to school, and the harsh cold weather that makes your skin crack (well, for those who live in colder countries!). I always know that we are in January because my hands become FLAKY and irritated, even if I wear quality hand cream every single day. I do wash my hands quite a lot during the day, so that doesn’t help, but it’s the only time of the year that I actually have flakes on them.

I’m sure it happens to many other people, but on their FACE. There’s a few things you can do in order to calm it down, hydrate, nourish and keep the skin alive until the warmer weather rolls around. Here are my top pro skin tips in this episode.

Hello everyone. Welcome back to the podcast Emilie here better known as the meta fairy and welcome and cheers to 2023! It has been a really lovely holiday season. I hope you guys had a good time and you had a chance to be with your families. I was actually away on a trip and I went hiking in the southwest. So I went to Arizona, I went to New Mexico. It was a really nice break from the wintry season that we have here up in Canada. We did get a lot of up here apparently we got some heavy duty snow but also some heavy duty rain. So when I came back, it was freezing rain and it was like okay, well welcome back to your hometown. So that was great. So I hope you guys had a really good time. I wanted to start off the year with a short and sweet episode on winter skincare tips. I know we talk a lot about the skin here but this is just going to be a really short and sweet episode to give you the best tricks that you can utilize when it’s cold and when it’s wintry. And when you see that your skin needs a little bit of TLC, because that’s what’s that’s the important thing that happens. That I’ve noticed on a lot of people is that during the holiday seasons, or during busy times of the year we tend to get off track our regular routines and that’s totally normal.  I’ll take myself as an example. I went away on my trip I had minimal skincare with me I had you know sunscreen, serum moisturizer and that’s pretty much it. But I did notice that my skin you know my skin is not easy. I do have an acne prone skin and as I get older, it tends to get somewhat easily dehydrated so I gotta balance it out, but I have to be careful not to clog it. So, you know, it’s a cocktail of, you know, I have to be careful with my skin.

So I noticed during my trip even though I was eating you know super well trying to eat super well because I’m still on a trip so I’m still having fun, but it’s easy to get off track. And it’s easy to notice a huge difference when you have a consistent routine when you have a consistent way of living. How when you get off track and whether you get off track for a specific purpose like a trip or it just because life is busy and you just get off track. He you can tell the difference in your skin when that happens. So that’s one of my biggest for the year. You know, we talked about the new year and all that jazz and for me, I think one thing that I’m going to stick to is nothing changes if nothing changes. Okay? And I say this to our clients all the time. If you expect really big and great and grand results with your skin. There are some things that are going to have to change you can’t expect your skin to magically transform itself. After all the years of damage that you’ve you’ve received, you know as the UV rays hit your skin and the way that you live and you know, scarring from past acne and all that jazz. It’s hard to fix a skin in a very little time if nothing changes. So and I think that’s a model that I’m going to use in a lot of things in life. Nothing changes if nothing changes, so remember that if you want to get into a new fitness journey, go for it. You have to change what you’re doing. You can’t expect things to just magically appear if you don’t do anything about it.

So that brings me back to my trip and noticing that my skin was not doing super well. Because obviously with the air traveling, it’s super dehydrated, and the inflammation oh my god, the inflammation is a real deal when you travel. There is so much inflammation internally that can happen because first and foremost, especially when you do air traveling. It sucks the life out of your skin so it’s easy for the skin to feel dehydrated to feel dry and to feel a little bit more irritated than usual. So that’s one thing. And then you’re obviously on holidays so you’re not eating super well. You’re you know you’re drinking, you’re having fun. You’re probably you’re probably not doing your routine like you should be doing. So inflammation guys is a real thing. So that’s what I noticed on my trip. I need to always make sure that the inflammation inflammation levels within my skin is really really low. So this brings me to winter skincare. I know we did a little rerouting with new year model but it brings me into the winter skincare tips. So as the new year comes along, most of you probably live in a climate that is a little bit more harsh during the winter months. So what we’re going to do, I’m going to give you some tips so that you can take care of your skin better during the colder winter months. I’ll start with the inflammation levels because I do feel that during this time of year inflammation levels are a lot higher than the summer months and the reason behind that is because the weather is so harsh and drying that obviously it’s going to influence your moisture barrier. Your moisture barrier is going to be under attack quote unquote. And you have to do everything to make sure that the moisture barrier is nice, healthy and hydrated. That’s the base of a healthy skin when your moisture barrier is not healthy. And it’s unbalanced and it’s irritated and it’s dry. The rest of your skin is going to be totally out of whack so you got to make sure to moisture rise a lot of people switch to a heavier moisturizer during the winter months because they need that extra cocooning which is part of the first tip here. Make sure that you have a hydrating but heavy enough moisturizer for your skin type to make sure that your moisture barrier doesn’t get unbalanced. That’s tip number one.

Another thing that you’re going to do is that you are not going to stop exfoliating. There is no point to hydrate skin cells that are dead and dry. So that’s why you need an exfoliation step in your routine so that you can remove that dead and dry skin cell buildup so that you can hydrate. A nice baby fresh cell that is coming up to the surface after you’ve exfoliate it. And that baby cell can be nicely moisturize so it’s important to always have somewhat of a regular exfoliating routine because it’s easy in the winter much to say. Or to think that oh it’s the winter. I’m not supposed to exfoliate, you’re always supposed to exfoliate. You can use a different type of exfoliator you don’t have to be as abrasive as you would be in the summer months. You can change the type of exfoliation that you use. You can use a chemical instead of a physical if that works better for your skin type. Or you can just slack off the times of the week that you do exfoliate. I think a good point would be two to three times a week. That’s a good balance to have. As soon as I got back from my trip I didn’t have that’s a stupid thing that I did. I forgot to bring an exfoliator with me so I could tell that my skin was really first of all it was dehydrated because of the desert and because of all the traveling but when I got home I was like okay, I need an express mini facial because this is crusty, like I could see the dead skin cell flakiness that was all around my face. And I was like, oh, gotta remove that because there’s again, there’s no point trying to hydrate skin cells that are dead and dry. So that’s tip number two, make sure that you are always having somewhat of an exfoliating routine in your winter skincare. Switch your type if your skin is more sensitive in the winter, but make sure that you still do because there’s no point in moisturizing, dead dry skin cell buildup, it’s not going to bring you the benefit of exfoliation when you don’t exfoliate.

Now tip number three is a pretty simple one. Make sure that you’re masking. Masking is especially cream masks. Masking is a really really fast way of giving your skin an extra boost in moisture or in nourishment. So again, the number one problem in the winter especially if you live up north in Canada, it is easy to have a dehydrated and inflamed skin because the weather is so harsh on the skin. So having somewhat of a masking routine that you can do every time you exfoliate. So once you remove that dead and dry skin cell build up, boom, do a quick mask a 10 minute mask that’s going to bring somewhat of an occlusive action so it’s gonna seal all the good stuff in your skin while you’re putting on and letting the mask act on your skin. So make sure that you have a nice green one. I can recommend you one. In the Guinot line we have the Essential Comfort Mask it is to die for it makes the skin so comfortable but also so radiant, and it doesn’t dry your skin out it’s a nice heavy clay mask but a clay mask that does not dry. So I’m gonna put the link below because it is a great mask to utilize in the wintertime. I love doing it on my clients. They love the feeling of the mask and the skin is so beautiful after. So make sure that you have a masking routine because that’s really really important to make sure that you’re getting extra treatment to your skin.

Now treatment wise when you go see an esthetician regularly I like to use LED. So funny thing LED. You’ve heard me talk about this many many times but it’s a light, right? And a light is energy for your skin cells. So that light is going to trigger a response from your skin cells. So when it comes to inflammation and dryness, I love to utilize led therapy because it will send the message to your skin cells to repair what’s going on in your deep layers within the skin. It’s going to lower the inflammation levels it’s going to increase circulation, it’s going to bring more oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells that are alive and need an extra boost in order to work efficiently. So one of the best treatments that I love to give during the winter times is an LED infusion with a collagen mask or a mask that that will be so good for your skin that you’re going to leave and you’re going to look like an amazing glowing light bulb basically. So utilize led therapy if you have an esthetician ask for LED therapy if you don’t feel free to pop over into give us a shout because LED is one of our favorite technologies to use on the skin. little sidenote, even if I was on holidays, I do like to still keep my learning up to date and I learned a little bit more about light therapies and the difference between the different wavelengths. It’s all things that are already new. But it’s nice to have a refresher because it’s easy to kind of, you know, be in the same routine and keep in your little routine like I said so. So I did take a few courses on on light therapies and it was really interesting but yes, light is a really really nice way of treating the skin without being abrasive especially when we talk about led we’re not talking about IPL and lasers because in that situation we are injuring the scan so that it can repair itself. But LED is the best non invasive light that you can use and it is really really recommended when we are in colder weather or when we are in the seasons where there’s a lot of inflammation that can occur. Within the skin layers.

So let’s recap. Tip number one, make sure that you’re using a heavier moisturizer super important. Tip number two, make sure that you’re exfoliating you want to keep that routine of exfoliation somewhat present even if it’s the winter months. You want to make sure that you’re still doing it so that you can get the full benefits of the exfoliation on the skin. And then you want to make sure that you have a somewhat of a masking routine. Every time that you exfoliate. If you want to make it even better, even more efficient within the skin. Make sure that you have a nice cream mask that can nourish your skin and that can bring back the radiance and the life in your skin cells. Because it is the winter and I’m sorry but the winter time is so harsh on the skin. We need the best tips to make sure that our skin doesn’t die on us. And if you need a little bit of professional help, you’re gonna go see your esthetician and you’re gonna book an LED therapy infusion treatment. All right. So those are the tips that I have for you for for the winter. There. I mean, I’ve got a lot more than that, but these are the general tips that I can give you that can that will definitely help your skin.

If we get into more specific tips concerning people that do have acne breakouts especially inflamed acne, I am one of those people so hello to you. But one of the tips that I like to use when it comes to inflammation. Because you know when we have inflamed acne, it’s not great. You can’t play with it. You’re going to spread the inflammation underneath. So you have to do everything in your capacity, your capable hands to make sure that you lower inflammation levels as much as possible. So what I like to do is to actually use ice cubes. Ice cubes are a really quick and efficient way of lowering inflammation levels. So what I’ll do is that I will take an ice cube I’ll put it in a wet paper towel, and I’ll just slightly kind of rub it on the areas where I do have inflamed acne and I do that for about 10 minutes. And I do that every night until the inflammation is reduced significantly. So that’s when you have a fresh blemish that is coming up. And you see that it’s going to be either cystic or anything with inflammation, do the IceCube trick. It’s really, really, really efficient on the skin. And if you have an at home led mask, I would recommend that you do that as well to send the message to your skin cells to repair the skin as much as possible and to flush the inflammation.

So that would be a specific tip on people that have more acne in the winter months because their skin is drier. And if you don’t have an you know what happens is when you have a skin that is prone to acne in that when you don’t exfoliate, because you’re scared of irritating it. You’re actually building up a dead skin cells a dead skin cell Bill build up at the top of the surface of the skin and that will block the sebum from coming out. So imagine a slide with kids that are sliding down the slide but you don’t have any water on the slide or you don’t have anything to bring the kids down. So every time there’s a kid that goes down, he’s getting stuck and that’s what’s going on with the pore lining. And with the sebum. It’s going in, but it’s not coming out because the pore is blocked. There’s no oxygen that’s penetrating.

Okay, so it’s important to exfoliate the skin so so so important to exfoliate the skin to make sure that you do have oxygen that gets into that lining and that you are reducing the chances of getting a breakout because we all know when there’s no oxygen that see acne bacteria is just going to thrive in there and that’s when you get inflammation so use the ice cube trick if you’re that specific person that does get breakouts with that are more inflamed, especially in the winter months when your skin gets drier. So hopefully this helped you out and remember 2023 Nothing changes if nothing changes. All right.

Think about it for a second, any skin disorder that you have took a long time to appear on your skin. It is NOT possible to reverse signs of aging in a minute. We have to remember that the skin is an organ, and it reflects what’s going on inside the body, so sometimes, yes, it throws us off course and we have to readjust! Not only that, but the external factors and daily habits will absolutely help (or not help!).

So, it’s time to get real, and to speak the truth about having realistic expectations when you’re jumping into a new routine, or a new skin program. What we’ll go over:

E73: 3 Bad Habits I Abused of in My Twenties That Affected My Skin

We’ve all been there : not using SPF, not cleansing our skin properly, using Susie’s face cleansing brush right after her using it (ew..) you name it, I’ve heard it! Today, I wanted to share some of my “skin sins” that I’ve done in my teenage years, and twenties that have affected the look of my skin (in a negative way!)

The one good thing to know is that since our skin is an organ, it does have to capacity to repair itself when damage is happening. However, it keeps recurring that’s when the capacity of repair becomes less and less effective over time. The best way to prevent damage is to be aware of it before, and to be preventive with your daily habits.

Let’s see some one the damage:

  3. Falling asleep with a face full of makeup
  4. Using everyone’s products but my own

Ahh the famous blackheads and pores. Many believe that products will get rid of them – this is absolutely false. Pores are there for a reason and you cannot remove them from your skin. If you didn’t have pores, your skin would not be able to bring your oils to the surface of the skin to protect itself. Pores are a group of tubes that bring the sebum to the surface of the skin for a specific reason: moisture barrier. Without oils, your skin would be DRY.
